Does your head EVER catch up?

I've been told a few times recently I'm "so tiny"... well I know that I've put on 9-10 lbs from my lowest, so I definitely don't FEEL tiny... and when I'm told I am I feel compelled to tell them "oh I've gained some weight too"...  I was 6 lbs from my goal weight this morning.  (ok - I can justify almost 2 lbs from my implants - LOL...)

Yesterday my sister told me I had no strength because she feels it all comes from our butts, and I have no butt - LOL... she laughed when she said it and said that's how she justifies hers.  I laughed with her.

At the Dr's yesterday the receiptionist told me "you're so tiny"...

So here I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum - where I've lost weight, but have gained some back and still am told I'm tiny.  Tiny was 10 lbs ago - not now.

Interesting enough - I'm the same weight I was in high school and was considered "pleasantly plump then"...

I understand!!

I had to pick up some meat at the grocery store last night, and they had samples of Chef Boyardee whole grain spaghettios. I refused, and the server actually said "But you're so skinny, you can afford the calories!"

Huh? Who's skinny? Oh, yeah, me. Ooops.

I still didn't have any. But I *did* make Linda Farnsworth Harris' 35 second lemon cake for dessert last night. Yummy! Tonight a half batch of the chocolate for a fresh brownie!

I think this is where the slope gets slipperly.  We look back at where we thought we were ok, or thought we were fat, and look now and it is very confusing.  I think part of it is that the world is overweight now.  So some of the folks who think I am tiny don't remember what normal is.  I'm no where near normal yet, but I am so much smaller than I was, I guess I seem tiny in comparison.

I sure hope so!   The "mental" part is by far the toughest part of my journey so far.   Cindy

I bet you were shaped differently in high school too

I weigh what I weighed in middle school. I did not have this body before, and I was not a size 4... EVER... and yet my pants read size 4 today. I think the last time I weighed in the 130's I wore an 8...

You shouldn't compare your current weight/body to your teenaged self, who still had baby fat and puberty (and if you are like me, a tighter tummy and fuller boobs were also part of my teenaged "fat" self)

Are you working from memory or from pictures? I was told I was fat all my life until I actually got fat (around 17) and I believed it, so thinking back, I remember a cubby round girl. Pictures argue with me. At the time I only saw a round face and didn't look beyond it. When I started putting weight I longed for those days again. Now that it's melting I still have to argue with myself about my true self-image (like the small leggings I FINALLY wore yesterday). Let me know when your head catches up with your body so I have something to look forward to as well :D

I also think that words like "tiny" and "skinny" can make the formerly fat feel defensive, like we are used to hearing them in a condescending tone or using them to describe people smaller than us, then one day you realize you are the smallest person in the room

7/18/10: 211lbs, 10/16/10: 174 lbs, 1/21/11: 146 lbs, 4/20/11: 131 lbs. Insulin FREE since 7/2010, "normal" BMI since 12/2010. I'm 31, 5'5", happily married, with a fabulous 3 year old boy, and hope to add to our family in the near future

From memory.  I was very "hour glass shaped" which I am now.  I know we change as we get older....  As far as sizes go - I don't really put a lot of weight in them anymore since vanity sizing has gotten so out of hand.  In high school at this weight I was a 12... go figure..  Now I'm just trying to have to NOT buy new clothes...in a bigger size anyway.

I remember a chubby round girl too - and my pics also argue with me.  But I was TOLD then I was "pleasantly plump" - of course what's THAT going to do to a teenagers' self-image?  Those were the days when Twiggy and Christie Brinkley and the thin slender woman was vogue. Of course "curves" weren't in style...  Of course I longed for those days too when I gained weight wondering "what the heck was wrong with my head then"?  LOL... I was very impressionable then.

Just when I thought my head HAD caught up with my body, I've put on some weight, and now I focus on that part of my body, which of course I'm NOT happy with.  I'll figure it out..   It all comes down to loving yourself and accepting what you can't fix (even though I HAVE done some fixing already with PS - LOL)....

Actually - my legs were very shar-pei like when I was at 125 and lower. They looked absolutely great in jeans or capris but I didn't feel comfy in shorts or a bathing suit.  Now they've filled out a bit and its not nearly as bad now - but now I don't like the way my thighs stick out.  So - trade one bad for a good, and another bad?

Honestly?  I think I look very healthy now.  I just don't like the number on the scale...

Ok - done rambling!!  You got me thinking...

My friend is working on her Doctoral thesis on obesity trends in the US.  She has done extensive research in WLS and outcomes.  One of the things she discovered in her research is that long term morbidly obese people often have bones that "thicken up" in order to allow us to carry around the heavier weight.  When you lose weight, you won't lose the extra mass in your bones.  You should expect to weigh more even when you fit in smaller sizes.

The scale may not be the best measure.  You probably are tinier.

I'd absolutely love to read that thesis. Does she have a website? Might be willing to share it. I could offer to help her if you want to connect me as I have written a Doctoral Thesis myself and I've had two weight loss surgeries.
