%$%&%$ NP - rant!!

Ok, had support group tonight.  It was run, this time, by the bariatric NP.  She continually harps on BMI as being the "only" and "best" measure of health.  She told me I was looking good, and asked my BMI.  It's 20.1, which is in the lower half of the average range.  She told me I could lose another 10-15 pounds!

However, my bones stick out, my hip bones HURT because there's no padding to cover them, so even jeans are rubbing me raw, and, in MY case, BMI is a crap number.

I told her that, and she stated (in front of newbies and pre-ops) that BMI is the best measure of health, and I'm "just fine" even if I lose more.

Idiot.  %^&*%*%*&V idiot.  The nuts and the surgeons agree with me that I should gain weight - she's a majority of one.  Uggghhhhh!!!!

Rant over - thanks for listening!

What the %!@#??? What is her BMI?? Your BMI is so healthy!

Wow... I don't even know what to say. Thank God she isn't a surgeon! I hope at the next meeting someone can talk to the newbies and assure them that BMI is NOT the be all, end all.

And I'm sorry if you were embarrassed by what she said in front of everyone. To tell you you could lose more weight is crazy.

You're at the low end of the normal BMI range and have given yourself a little bounce back room, for heaven's sake. I wonder what she's smokin'?

Just proof that no matter what we weight, not everyone is going to be happy.

BMI that just uses weight and height doesn't account for how flabby or muscled someone is.  I think it is pretty much a made up number.

You know where you need/want to be.  In the middle of your normal made up number sounds pretty good to me.

Be where you are comfortable, if it means an extra 10 pounds for bounceback and you are comfu there screw her! All of them dont really know and I dont feel every dr/nurse takes into account of genetics, how many children and even height.
You are doing great! Stay where you are comfy!

BMI is only a tool, and as with any tool it only works as well as the user.
I wonder if she would tell a body builder with a high bmi that he/she would be a canditate for surgery! LOL

Some people scare me.

BMI is crap.  It's nothing more than a height weight chart.  Takes into account NOTHING else.  I think its pablum for the masses.  It's a quick and dirty calculation, which is usually the most that stupid people can accommodate.

You know your body, you know where you've come from, you know what feels good and looks good.  Sometimes the stupidity of people in the medical profession scares me because, for god's sake, they have our lives in the their hands.

OK, my rant over too.

Thanks, you guys! I really appreciate it!

I was smokin' when I got home last night - I've managed to convert the nuts to using BMI only as a gross measure, and to considering body fat percentage as a more reliable indicator. The other bariatric np also agrees (or is at least too polite to outright disagree with me) that BMI is not the be all and end all. The surgeon got it from the start.

This woman is just unteachable. And yes, she advocates Flintstones and no additional iron after menopause, and that biotin "reduces hair loss after surgery." And yet she's the bariatric coordinator and a nurse practitioner! (and yeah, one of the topics last night in a whispery gossip from another patient BEFORE she pissed me off was when she was going to have the surgery - her BMI is at least 35).

However, I know what I need to do, and where I need to be, and that will suffice.

Thanks for letting me rant!

You have done an amazing job.  Congratulations on your success - sounds like she might be a little jealous!!

I would stay where I was comfortable and felt good.
