Things to have at the house

My WLS is set for the 17th of this month. I still have 1 more class I have to do for my pre admission. But is there anything any of you can suggest that I have on hand for whan I get home from the hospital.

Also after you were home how much water were you able to drink with in the first 1-3 days of being home.

Did you try to drink a shake or crystal light?

Thank so much
God Bless

We were to drink an ounce every 15 minutes of some fluid.  Our protein counted.  We couldn't have ANY protein but vanilla and fruit flavors which were whey isolate only.  We got a list.  Other liquids could include skim milk, crystal light, decaf tea or coffee, herb teas, SF popcycles, sf jello.  Everything tasted too much for me excep****er.  I put protein in my decaf coffee, used the unjury chicken broth, had vanilla protein with orange crystal light or rasberry.  I did much better, still do with warm drinks instead of cold.  Even lukewarm was better than cold.  I think we were to aim for 64 oz but it took a few days to get to that amount.
Just keep something in front of you all the time and sip, sip, sip.  Inbetween  walking and resting, that is.
I imagine your next class will give you more information of exactly what your Dr wants.  They all seem to be different to some extent.  Some folks are on liquids for weeks, others come home of mushies.

How exciting.  It will be here before you know it.  I had a sip bottle and I kept that with me all the time and sipped out of it constantly.  I kept it by the bed and when I would wake up in the middle of the night I would sip.  The most important thing you can do for yourself is to stay hydrated.  I found that crystal lite was too potent so I used it but cut it in half.  I had my protein shakes when I got home, but mostly drank water the first week.   Have some real comfortable pj's and extra pillows to support you if you lay on your side, it'll keep you from rolling onto your stomach.

Take care,
Sue

Get protein shake samples and your vitamins - you don't say what surgery you're having so I can't say what vitamins you  need.  Have whatever foods and drinks will be on your doc's meal plan for the first week or two.  I was on full liquids so I had broth, cream soups, yogurt, protein shakes, clear protein drinks, jello, pudding, popsicles, crystal lite, etc.

I was able to get close to 64 ounces of fluid in from the start but I had to pay close attention to do it.

I had clear protein drinks in the hospital and drank protein shakes and crystal lite both at home.

Yes, protein powders for shakes and crystal light are good to have on hand if you don't care for plain, cool, clear, water.  lol

Walmart's Body Fortress and Costco's Muscle Milk are both examples of protein powders that mix with milk.  Strive for powders that have more than 20 gms of protein and less than 5 grams of carbs.  Those two do.

Syntax Nectar @ mybariatricpantry.com has fruit flavors that mix in water to give you 24 gms of protein while getting your water in too.  I put a scoop into 16 oz. of water so it's diluted.  A little crystal lite can be added for flavor if need be.

Lots of sugar free jello in the fridge!  It gets your liquid into you and is easy on the tummy.

I was able to work up to 48 oz. of water within a week, which the doc said was very good for that early out.  Sip sip sip and you'll get there too!

Keep it simple by staying hydrated, work on getting the protein in, and the rest (soups and such) will follow when it's time.

You're going to do great and I'm sliding over early for make room for you on the loser's bench!  :-)

My Drs have everyone follow the same pre and post op stuff mostly for all surgeries that they do. There is a way you can get your Dr, date, and surgery listed on your ave but can't remember exactly how.

found it. Go to My OH, journeys, surgery and I think you add it there.

In addition to the things mentioned above, be sure to have some liquid tylenol, colace (stool softener), milk of magnesia, and suppositories for constipation.  Being able to go was a problem I had for most of the first month after surgery.

I had a real difficult time getting my water/liquids in.  I was able to get in only 30-36 oz each day.  I survived.  I had to keep water in my bedroom, and each time I awoke (which was often in that first month) I would sip, sip, sip.  If I had not done that, I'm sure I would have become dehydrated.

I had crytsal light in a lot of flavors and discovered I got heart palpitations ( dumping ! ) from aspartame ...grrr .

so lemons in ( lukewarm or room temperature with a splash of refrigerated ) ifiltered water did the trick 4 me

candied ginger was a favorite for nausea

organic ( imagines a great one ) free range chicken broth ( yes U CAN taste the difference )

Polish soupmixes , mushroom and so forth

skim milk powder

butter buds ( freeze dried fat free natural buter solids - in the baking section )

fat free Promise margarine ( NOT LIGHT )

butter flavored oil spray for cooking

Splenda n brown sugar Splenda

sauce mixes that come in packets ( fourcheese is great ,pesto , creamy pesto ... garlic herb... 0
U dont need any fat to make these ( make sure the fat content on the back is less than 1.5 grams a serving ) - you can mixthem up wit hthe butter buds and the skim milk and serve Ur food in them - a lot easier than trying to eat dry

dreamfields pasta just in case the devil sits on Ur shoulder ( the absorbable carb content is 75% less than regular pasta )

farfree cottage cheese , fat free swiss and cheddar slices from Kraft ( better than the white and yellow American but very similar ) fatf ree mozzarell if U can get it , fatfree ricotta

Hunts tomato sauce I believe- very cheap a buck a can usually or $ 1.18 but GREAT stuff ( comes tall cans) ,make sure U check the fat content its under 1 gram of fat per serving

extra italian spices and dried garlic to hook that canned sauce up !

a bit of high quality Italian Parmesan / Romano / Asiago cheese ground up

veggies - fresh mushrooms

maybe squash if U can get it to roast and puree into acream soup with Ur stock , butter buds and skim milk

Jello fat free sugar free puddings

good luck April !

I also enjoyed chili beans .... ( just generic ) Goya beans in sauce ( theyre pretty much all good ) 97% fat free Turkey chili from Hormel .... vegetarian chili ( again - check the fatcontent there is fat free (

and fat free refried beans ...

The BESTEST way to hook these up is to buy a coupla boxes of 42 c ent macaroni n cheese and mix up the cheese sauce ( I give the macaroni to my worms in the garden) .. with skim milk n butter buds...... throw in teh refried beans and melt a little cheese on top ...YUMMO .

hope this helps !

Take a look at this link for ideas of what to have at home:
http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/wls_lightweights/4319764/N ewbie-Tool-Box-UPDATED-2011-Feb-12/

I could only drink a shot glass full, about 1 oz, the first day.  The end of the second day, 2 shot glasses full. I stayed there for a couple days.  Then 3 oz mid-week. I did have a couple episodes where I drank too much too fast, once when I took my daily pills and just did my "normal" water gulp.  OUCH!  So I trained myself using a sippy cup. Now I know that a good sip fills the well below my tongue.... kinda weird, but that's my "good sip."

For protein samples, I went to vitalady.com and looked.  Then I called them and said OK, I want low carb, under 140 calories and over 20 grams of protein per serving.  The girl fixed me right up.

Good luck, and preparing to swing for you
tracey

p.s.  Ava's idea of the lemons worked for me.  Our well water "sat heavy" in  my stomach, but when I squirted a bit of fresh lemon juice in it, I was able to keep more water in my stomach.  Gina said it was probably a pH thing.....
