Sublingual Vit' question
Can Sublinguals really be swallowed? The packaging says it can. I am so over the bitter taste.
Right now I'm taking two at a time under the tongue. Is that okay to do?
I am taking Vitamin A 10,000 IU, B-12 2500 mcg, and Foic Acid 1,200. The B-12 is the worst tasting and takes the longest to disolve.
What does eveyone else do?
Thanks

I've heard the sublingual A is pretty nasty tasting but I don't have any trouble with the B12 and folic acid sublinguals. Unfortunately, if you have the RNY or DS, and possible the VSG, B12 is important to take as sublingual or as a shot. B12 needs intrinsic factor and we have no, or very limited, intrinsic factor left since our sleeves and pouch greatly reduce or eliminate intrinsic factor from the picture. Maybe look into getting B12 shots rather than dealing with the sublinguals.

I think the only one that has to be sublingual is B12. Mine is great tasting and dissolves in an instant. I use Natures bounty, 500mcg and I do 2 a day. Having labs drawn tomorrow and we'll see how well it is working.

If you had RNY, VSG or DS, you no long have much intrinsic factor in your tummy so you won't absorb the B12 in the sublingual if you swallow it. If you don't like the taste of the sublingual, you can get a B12 patch or nasal spray or take it in shots.
As far as A and folic acid, those do not need to be sublingual. Take a pill meant to be swallowed.

The same way it dissolves under the tongue. There is no intrinsic factor under the tongue either. if it is designed to dissolve under the tongue it should dissolve in the mucous membranes of the stomach which is the same type of tissue as under the tongue.
Absorption also depends on the tablet disintegrating rapidly when it comes in contact with any moisture,as in under the tongue with saliva. There should be enough naturally occuring moistness in the stomach to start the disolution and then it will absorb through the stomach membranes just like fluid does.

My understanding is that the sublingual is absorbed directly into the blood stream when dissolved under the tongue but if you take B12 as a pill it has to have intrinsic factor to be absorbed in the gut. Since we malabsorbers and sleevers have little or no IF, we need another delivery method.
Just keep an eye on your labs.

Hmmm. that's an interesting idea but I wonder, if that's the case, why the ASMBS says it needs to be sublingual? I'm wondering if the tablet would come in contact with the mucous membranes in the pouch long enough to absorb that way. When it's under your tongue, you're holding it against the mucous membranes. In your pouch, chances are it would not even stay in the pouch long before moving into the small intestine and it may not be pressed against the side of the pouch.
