carbs and maintenance
Ok so I've always heard about the bounce back...but I thought it was from overeating...I did not realize it was as soon as you started eating normal amounts of carbs....I have started eating a bit of fruit...some wasa crackers....yesterday I had refried beans...(non fat)...and all week I've been sort of increasing the carbs...good carbs though and not enough calories to make me gain weight...but there it is on the scale...3 pounds....WAZ UP WITH THAT? is it water retention....is it my period that's late...I mean 3 weeks.. but I'm 50 and perimenopausal...so anyhow I don't want to freak out...everything fits the same...I have NOT been drinking nearly enough water...but I don 't want to freak out ....is this the bounce back? does this happen when you start eating carbs even if your calories are low? do carbs make you retain water? please advise...SEAVIEW

Yes carbs do make me retain water in that sense ... if I want to be REALLY cut up I have to cut them out ... but then I feel hungry and like I want to eat a bagel all the time lol ....
Personally I am not into doing battle with my body every day . The outside world is battlefield enough ! I find I CAN ( thank God ) eat bread with jam , and fat free carbs in moderation , and veggies , and fat free dairy ....as long as its fat free and high fiber . OR I can eat low fat and high protein MEATS .... and so forth again with veggies .....and fiber .... but not all together ... they have to be several hours apart .
Susan Somers wrote several books describing this as the French diet or something ... it makes sense . Theres a lot I don't agree with that she wrote but I have TRIED this extensively and it WORKS very well.
So try it this way - carbs with fat free meals only ... and separated from fats by at least two hours ......
see if it helps U . I would also include a fig with that meal !
good luck Sweetie

Quick Hijack,
Speaking if figs we have a gorgeous fig tree in our yard that produces beautifully. However I always seem to lose most of it to birds or squirrels if I leave them to long on the tree. If I harvest them to keep them away from the rodents they go bad so quickly I might as well have left them on the tree. Any suggestions for preservation other than jam or preserves?

I was also thinking that U mentioned beans .... I have NEVER not eaten beans and not been several lbs heavier the next day due to the salt content /fiber content .
Then the NEXT day I get thoroughly cleaned out and am LIGHTER ...so maybe thats what's going on with U .
Beans give me a LOT of energy though and I'd never give them up .....

Seaview, come to the VSGM (vertical sleeve gast. maintenance) group and ask your question. There's a lot of good information over there.
I've read (and you'll need to fact check this because I'm fuzzy) that it takes something like 4 pounds of water weight stored when we're eating more carbs. That's why people experience a rapid weight loss the first week when going low carb. I bet if you cut the carbs for a few days the pounds would be gone. It doesn't sound like bounce back weight but your body adjusting to storing water for carbs. You may find that you want to shed a few more pounds so that you can eat those carbs and still be at your personal goal.
I know that I didn't lose between thanksgiving and new years and had to really cut carbs to start losing again. I eat a little veggies and a few berries along with my protein now and it's working for me.

you ladies are both right on...I needed to hear this...yes the refried beans are SALTY...so is the salad that I ate from the mexican place...its' probably the salt and the carbs...and I am going to do an experiment today to see...no carbs...no salt and I'll report back tomorrow....or the next day to see...
thanks..I don't really want to lose more weight...in the sense that I don't want to be leaner...but I have to get comfortable with the number and that's arbitrary.....it's all an adjustment and an excercise in acceptance...thanks ladies...SEAVIEW

Not in maintenance, but before I had surgery, I cut out all bread products and grains, including whole grains. I still ate unprocessed starchy vegetables and got carbs in that way. I didn't realize how bloated I was from the grains. I also discovered a wheat sensitivtiy. When I eat grains, especially any kind of wheat products, I bloat up really fast. Maybe try sticking to whole natural real food carbs like potatoes and corn and legumes to try to keep from losing too much and see what that does for you? Just throwing it out there. :)
