In my never-ending quest to remember the scale is not everything, I like to ponder my NSVs (non-scale victories) on a regular basis.  I list my top three recent NSVs below.  I invite you to do the same!

#1 - While in FL on vacation this week, my best friend gave me some size 16 capris with no waistband that were too big on her.  We concluded that the pants should fit in the summer.  I tried them on later that day, and they fit beautifully!  I started this journey three months ago as a tight 3X!

#2 - I just got back my 3 mo lab results.  My cholesterol is 119 (was 225).  My BP was so low that I am now off my meds.  My C-Reactive (a sign of inflammation/heart attack risk) went from .95 to .40!  Normal is below .80.

#3 - I have to take in the seat belt on the plane.  Before my surgery, I needed an extender on regional planes.

So what are your top three recent NSVs?

1. Really celebrating my 1 year surgiversary.  Allowing people to celebrate me and taking in how good that feels.

2. Practicing unconditional love for myself, which means not judging myself for where I am on this journey.  Really focusing on the cup almost full in my life.

3. Dating

4. Starting the Couch to 5K and actually running on the treadmill.  HUGE victory after ankle surgery and last October back injury that left me unable to exercise.  I've never run before in my 60 years.  Well, ok, maybe since I was six.

Way cool on your new running endeavor.  Have you picked out a 5k to do?  I find having a real target keeps me committed to exercise/training plan like nothing else.

I do!  I have a lake in front of my house that I've been walking for decades.  My dream is to be able to run around it.  ;)

Lee, can I just say I really love your posts? I hope to one day be able to follow your practices regarding loving myself unconditionally.

Abby, I'm honored to hear you say that.   Why wait?  Why not start loving yourself today.  The only thing that you need to know is that you have the choice.  Nobody can take that away from you.  Choose love because if you don't, who will?

Wow Deb,

Those are great victories and look at you rocking maintenance.  Do you have any great tips for the rest of us?

Thanks Lee. I am almost 3 years out and am maintaining at around 130. Biggest issue is constipation which is more related to another issue I had before WLS, but fiber, fluids and some time OTC stuff helps.

I would say the most important things are 1) work on loving yourself. This is work, this is therapy, this is ongoing. But by true love and acceptance there is joy and not contant striving or cravings. Beating ourselves up is not the answer.

2)change your lifestyle. Find things you love to do, love something else more than eating. Just like everyone else I am not naturally inclined to want to work out, but you can find things to enjoy about it (even if it is when you stop!). Also I love how the body feels and looks when you discover what it was meant to do. I was lifting a weight yesterday and just put my other hand on my shoulder and could feel the muscle tighten and work. It was a nice surprise. I think sometimes I love my body more just because I am more aware of it's function.

And in regards to dating, send me a message and I will tell you more!
