OT - Heather or any other xray techs out there?

Took my daughter for a sonogram on Tuesday.  She's 18 weeks pregnant.  Sonogram tech said everything looked good. She showed us all the body parts ect.  We get a phone call today from the Drs office saying they couldnt see all 4 chambers of the baby's heart and want to schedule another sonogram at 28 weeks.  (The tech pointed out the 4 chambers to us).   Drs office said the baby is in breach position and sometimes the spine obstructs a good visual of the heart.   Im just sorta scratching my head over why the tech said she could see all 4 chambers yet the Dr or radiologist said they couldnt.   Cindy

All I know is that whenever I have had any check on body parts, from mammogram to MRI, the tech never says what is there. They always have deferred to the doctor "reading" the scan. Even when I had my leak check after surgery, I had to wait for a doctor to read the x-ray. I am surprised the tech would tell you anything.

Anyone correct me if I am wrong, please.

She wasnt diagnosing anything.  She was just pointing out body parts.... "there's his fingers, there's his eys, nose, spine, heart," etc    Cindy

Coming out of lurking to say: I think the "rules" are different when it comes to obstetric ultrasounds.   Its normal for the tech to point out body parts and even tell you the sex of the child without having to wait for a Dr to "read" the results.  Now she in no way should "diagnose" medical problems, but to share the body parts & sex of the child is normal.  Praying that its just the spine blocking the heart and there's no serious issues.

Thanks for the input. I am so old, there weren't sonograms in my day. Everything was a surprise. I was just sorry you got mixed messages, which cause you concern. I hope the doctors are correct and the spine is in the way and all is well.

I wouldnt read much into it, seriously! If the tech pointed out the 4 chambers to you, more than likely they are there. It is possible she did not get a good "photo" of it for the doc to read and the ones she did, it may have been obstructed. I would take it as WOOHOO another ultrasound.
BTW, I tend to trust the techs more than the Docs, they have more time in, more experience and normally know what they are doing..... but that is Just my opinion...Keep us updated though ok...
Oh one more thing, if he is waiting another 10 weeks to do it, he is not worried, if he was she would be in there yesterday!
