I bet U could even take a half dozen cuttings of it this time of year or just a bit later when it starts to put out leaves ... dip the ends in rooting hormone and put them in a tray of damp sand - put the whole thing in a plastic bag with the end tied and put in a shady cool spot in Ur garden ....
and U just might be incredibly pleasantly surprised in a few months when U see new leaves !
Ur old rose sounds SO intriguing ... I have lots of reference books if U happen to have pictures of the flower and leaves and distinctive thorns ....

If of they mortal goods thou art bereft,
And from they slender store
Two loaves alone to thee are left,
Sell one, and with the dole,
Buy hyacinths to feed thy soul."
--Musharish-Ud-Din Sadi (13th century)
My peony garden contains all the peonies from my grandmothers' gardens that I could dig. They mean so much to me. When they flower and scent the kitchen, because they are just below those windows), I am taken back 40 years or more, remembering THEIR homes. Lovely. So many of my plants came from other people, and I pass them on as cuttings or divisions. Makes me feel good that something from me makes another's house a home.
