Oh LW Goddesses Who Have Gone Before Me on the Trail of Happy Tool Use, I seek Guidance.

At today's 1 week post-op, the NP (who is a WLSer himself) tells me that the average calories for the first six weeks is 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200.  He said I'd probably average around that,  more or less for my second week of full fluids, then 2 weeks of purees, then 2 weeks of mushies.

I really haven't been focusing on calories, but trying to suck down fluids and maximize protein consumption. Listen to me, talking like this has been more than a puny six days.

Help! What direction did any of you get, and what did you DO, for your first six weeks?  Calories, protein, whatever....  I don't want to lose this golden opportunity to maximize my weight loss, but I don't want to make myself sick, lose my hair, etc....

I'm a Sleever if that makes any difference.

Well, I've got a sleeve if it helps. :)

I am still focusing on protein, liquids, then veggies if I can fit them in and who's counting calories???? I'm counting protein and carbs. And LIQUIDS. Don't have time to count anything else. And I'm doing fine on the weight lose...
I lost 9 lbs the first week
I lost 3.6 lbs the second week
I lost 2 lbs the third week
I lost 4.4 lbs the fourth week
Total in 4 weeks = 19 lbs

Not bad for a lightweight. Gina said she lost 15 lbs her first month. :)

As an rny, my advice was probably different. I was told to not focus on calories at all, that unless I was drinking nothing but full sugar/fat milkshakes, I couldn't take in enough to subvert the pouch. Protein - they recommended 60 g per day, but when I researched the ASMBS formula indicated 90-100 g per day, so I did that instead.

At about a year out, I was getting in about 1200 calories per day, and now am between 1600-1800 most days to maintain.

Well, let me tell you this. The first couple weeks, until you are on purees and maybe full liquids, you will NOT get many calories in. I was lucky if I got 300 during that phase. After that, my particular surgeon says to stay around 600-800 calories per day and to get at least 60g protein per day. He wants this to be our goal every day until we reach goal weight. 1200 calories sounds like a lot for 6 wks out. I don't know if I could get 1200 if I'm not drinking my calories. I'll be honest with you--I am a bad sleever in that I am not tracking my food closely. I pretty much am counting protein grams and fluid ounces and that's it right now. I am going to start tracking everything, though, in about a week when I can reactivate my bodybugg.

Uh, that was rambly. Was it helpful? heh

We were told specifically to not count calories.  Only fluid and protein.  Still that is what we are suppose to be counting.  I show more than that on Miles and Menus because the tracker I use, here on this site, shows all that and more.  So I put it on.  I don't pay much attention to the calories but I have started paying more attention to the carbs since in Jan. I only lost 4 lbs. In Feb so far I have lost more than that.  Maybe I would have anyway but who knows.  I am somewhere in the 700-800 range now at almost 6 months, 90-110 protein, under 30 carbs.

I was also told to not count calories....just protein and to saty away from empty carbs.

That said, I did track.  The first month, I was a around 400 cals/day.  From 2-5 motnhs about 600-800 cals/day.  I had a steady increased from months 6 and beyond and now at almost 9 months out I just reached goals and am at 1100-1200 cals/day.

I was told to keep it under 800 calories during the losing phase. Because of my exercise, I did get up to 1200 but I was close to 6 months out at that point, not 6 weeks.

Here's what I ate (and corresponding exercise) the first year out:

Everyone's posts are sooooo helpful. I'm a rule follower in general, unless the info I'm given sounds out of whack.  I'm hearing the whack-a-doodle bird chirping in my ear about the 1200 cals/day at 6 wk thing.   And I've decided to drown out the bird with the loud murmur of goddess speak.

thanks. Tracey

At 3 months out, I'm averaging  600-800 calories..some days I drink an extra shake to get the protein in and then go up to 1000 but I did stall for a while in January and have been much more
restrictive in my calories and carbs and have resumed losing.

My doctor told me not to count calories but to make certain that I got at least 60grams of Protein in..due to my height 4'11" (others say 100) and to stay under 50 grams of carbs.. she also told me that my calories were okay..even the days that I went over the 1000 mark because they were
Protein and Vegetable calories as opposed to carbs..

I also had blood tests done a week ago an I am showing low Vitamin D..getting the right kind via pills and mild anemia.. so now I have to take vitamins with iron..

I think basically that you are doing the right thing.. try to focus on fluids and maximize protein
and don't worry too much about calories..
I will say though..don't eat carbs in the forms of breads, rice and Chinese food..
hangs head in shame..I was eating small bites a couple of months ago..cause i love them so much...
