2 Questions - Hypoglycemia & PPI's

My surgeon was the speaker at my support group tonight.  I didn't know it but he had called in a script this morning for me for Protonix.  I was able to pick up 10 pills at the pharmacy tonight because that's all they had.  They'll mail me the rest.

I'm going to email my PCP about my blood sugar levels.

Lee - being RNY versis your VSG, not sure how much of this applies... but...

My Reactive Hypoglycemia "episodes" happen when I have TOO many carbs and sugars... not when I have them cut back.  When I'm low carb, no problem.  I agree its a coincidence that it happened when you were low carbing.

I totally 'GET' what you mean of binging on the peanut butter crackers.  I bought a package to keep in the car and ended up eating them, when I wasn't having problems....  so, when I DO start feeling "yucky" I eat a spoonful of peanut butter.  The mix of protein/sugar takes care of my problems.  Hopefully I'm home when it happens...

I hope you figure it out.  I also bought a glucose meter from Walgreens.  I haven't used it yet... but if you read Pam T's blog, she talks about this and about testing relentlessly to see when you're apt to have problems.

 Hi Jody,

I'm going to give this some time and see what happens.  I know, it sounds really strange that I'm reacting like this on berries.

The way my surgeon described it tonight, as a former 249 pounder, when I get simple carbs (fruit) into my system, it still releases the insulin that it would have at 249 pounds.  I think I have that right.  There was a lot of information going around the meeting tonight.

Yup, I'm with you on the peanut butter crackers. I would definitely eat them all.  Crackers = crack - I KNOW I can't eat one.

I have nothing helpful to offer here, Lee, but I do hope you get to the bottom of this and soon.

Sorry your sleevie is unhappy! You have gotten some great advice already. I know my hubby cant do generic with his reflux, doesnt work as well.

Hypoglycemia, quite possible, and you have gotten some great advice on that too.

But, regarding low carb, there can be a great diuretice effect that can make you feel lousy. When I did atkins preop, it was recommended to have a cup or 2 of full sodium broth. And it did make me feel better.

Feel better!

Thanks Maria!

I had my regular Protonix last night and slept just great!  Maybe it was all a fluke and I had a Sleevie bug.  I may try the generic further down the road to see if it was a fluke or not, but not today!

Thanks for the tip on the sodium broth.  I haven't found myself lacking in sodium yet because I eat aged cheddar cheese which is high in sodium as well as some other meats etc.  I'd actually like less sodium.  I do keep Trader Joe's packets of Chicken Broth in my desk at work in case I need it.
