Question about goal weight....Yours vs. your doctor

Things have been great for me so far and I have no complaints. I was just in touch with my surgeon and updated him on my progress thus far. I have had a goal weight of 150 in mind as I am 5'7", but the doc says 160 would be ideal with a healthy BMI of 25. It's such a small difference that 155 may be the magic number but I just wanted to hear what many of you may have experienced with your own goals vs your docs.

Thanks

Basically, my doctor let me choose my own goal weight, as long as it was in the normal BMI range.  I chose 140 (I'm 5'5") because I once was that weight, (for two days, when on fen-phen right before it was taken off the market).  This time I plan on being that weight for a lot longer, and then decide if I want to lose more.

Thanks! That was funny about the one day but trust you are not alone. Best of luck to your continued success.

I set my goal lower than a normal BMI to give myself a little bounce back room. I think I aimed for 21.5 or 21.7 BMI...anyway, I made it, and have had only a 5 pound bounce back putting me in the 22-something BMI range. Go a little lower than you're comfortable with and your bounce back will bring you up to where you want to stick.

ETA: I set mine lower than the higher end of normal BMI range not down into the underweight range...just to clear that up.

My surgeon didn't mention a goal in mind. My PCP asked me what goal I had in mind, I said 120-130 which would put me below a 25 BMI and in the normal range. He seemed happy with that answer.

My surgeon said 130. I said 140 but I would really like to get to a normal BMI, which will put me around 125. My plan is to keep going until my body stops, or 125. We'll see what happens. Part of it means that I have to own up to how tall I am. I used to be 5' but I don't think I am anymore. With a 6'4" hubby, I don't want to admit I am 4'whatever.

I just measured after reading about folks growing. Well, not me. I am now 4'10", yuck. That certainly changes where normal BMI will be. Now I guess I need to be aiming more around 120. Hummmmmmm

my surgeon didn't set a goal weight for me.  my ob/gyn has always said that my 5'7" frame was built to carry a woman that weighs no more than 155 pounds.  my PCP would like me to be 140 but don't know if that's possible.  when i reached 155 my ob/gyn said he'd like for me to weigh 145......i weigh 150.6 and i'm in a size 4 jeans.  size 6 dress pants/skirts.  my bones are beginning to stick out so i don't think i'm going to go below 150.  if i had a tummy tuck and thigh life i'd probably go down a few more pounds....(saving my lunch money for the TT!)

for now i'm just going to work hard to maintain!

best wishes to you!
Blessings,  J

My surgeon didn't set a goal weight either.  He DID say "I would consider you successful if you lost 55-65% of your excess weight, a range of 132-150. I pointed out to him that over 132 is still obese for 5' tall.  He said "The national average for VSG weight loss is 60% of excess weight."

I told him I was above average and I wanted to weigh 124 AFTER my bounce back.  He said that was up to me, and that my dedication to following my food plan and staying on track was the key to achieving my goal.  I mentioned to my NUT that I'd really like to be on the low end of the BMI scale, and she said that I'd probably look emaciated below 124 with my bone structure, and she'd prefer to see me at a final weight of 132.  When I was 118 in my 20s, the bumps and divots of my bones in my rib cage showed, so unless I get some major fat redistribution, she's probably right.

We will see.  124 is my low goal right now.

My surgeon didn't give me a goal, but predicted that I'd wind up about 154. At 144, he told me I had done fabulously and could stop any time - and probably SHOULD stop.

I'm at 121, and working to stay here or gain a couple (no more than 4) pounds.

I NEVER thought I would EVER say that!!!
