Overweight-29.8 and happy!

Checked my BMI this morning and I am overweight! Have spent so many years in obese, that this is a happy milestone.  (me taking my bow)

I gave myself a Valentine present yesterday and joined a bare bones gym near my home. It's just machines, no spa, sauna, pool, tennis courts, etc, so fairly cheap.

Now to use it. I had an orientation yesterday and really feel it in my arms. I walk, but that doesn't do much for my smooshy parts. My doctor says if I don't do some weight work to build muscle, I will be able to eat very little once I hit maintenance.

That's terrific that you joined the gym!

Thanks, Lee. I see your ticker has moved, so I bet you are happy with the low-carb. I peek at the Atkins board sometimes. I found the OhYeah! bars at the gym. Tried one yesterday, dangerously good, but I ate only half of a half.

We'll see how I stick with the gym. The person who did my orientation is an older woman, and very patient. I may hire her as a trainer for a few sessions, to get comfortable.  See you soon.

Congrats, Wendy!  I started off around this time out just walking, too.  I didn't start going crazy until about 4 months out.  The more intense workouts will give you lots more energy, you'll see.  See you on fitness fun.

Thanks, Rosa. I miss your posts. I bet you are busy with your social life by now.

Several people who work out have told me it will help my balance, posture, and endurance. I need all three.

You're Dr is a wise person.  I lost a LOT of muscle and its hard to get it built back up, and I can tell I'm a lot weaker now than I was pre-surgery.

Congrats on the overweight!  I also belong to a gym and need to get back to it.  Mine is pretty bare bones too, I really don't need the pool, spa, etc.  They don't have tennis courts but do have raquetball courts, but then I don't play raquetball.  I joined for the machines - so its working for me and its inexpensive.

Thanks, Jody. I have never been "fit". I walk enough so I can take my dog with friends on small hikes, but I have never been strong or toned. I needed to tell people, so I can be accountable. Writing the check each month may motivate me, too.

Hi Wendy,

Congratulations on moving into the "overweight" category!!!  That is a great feeling!

I started working with a trainer in December, because I had lost so much muscle mass and was feeling so weak. Walking wasn't cutting it, so I started working with a trainer twice/week and started a pilates class once/week. In between, I have been trying to add in more cardio. When I started, I couldn't do one pushup, situps, or hold a plank for 30 seconds. Last night, I was able to do at least 4 real pushups and the weight that I am able to push or lift has increased markedly. My trainer was impressed that I have come so far in the 2.5 months that we have been working together. I feel stronger each week and I don't struggle lifting the big boxes of kitty litter (LOL). I think I am almost as strong as I was pre-surgery, but with more endurance and quickness to my step.

Weight training is great and your doctor is very correct.

BTW, I hit the high end of a normal BMI last week and celebrated by buying myself a necklace. The non-food rewards are wonderful.

You are doing great!!!
