I got my date

I saw my surgeon on Friday.  She was awesome. I was so nervous, I was so affraid that after months of going through all the pre-op stuff that when I would finally see the surgeon she would decide I shouldn't have the surgery but I was wrong. She felt that I was a really good candidate for this surgery and that I would do well.  So after I was done with her I walked across the hall and talked to the lady who does her scheduling.  She put my tentative date for March 17th.  If all goes ok with ins approval then I hopefully i will have my surgery on that date.  I had everything done except for a Pyloric blood test which they have to send out and they said could be up to a week to get that back. I guess my ins requires it so once they get that back they will submit.  Keeping my fingers crossed that .

Thanks Gina.  I have a question about my vitamins pre-op.  Right now I am taking 1 Centrum Complete Multi-vit., 1 5,000 Biotin, 1 Caltrate calcium & Vit D Chew 600, I was taking 50,000 D2 per week but now regular dr told me to stop taking that and to switch to D3 twice daily 5000 IUD she said she found out that we need D3 more then D2.  Is this correct? She I be doing anything different for my pre-op vit?
Thanks appreciate your input.

She is spot on about taking 2 - D3 at 5000IUs. Dry D3 is the way to go from here on out. They are finding that normal people can't do much with D2. Dry D3 is much much better.

I would start drinking protein shakes. You can order samples from www.Vitalady.com . You can also get Syntrax Nectar at VitaminShoppe if you'd like to get started right away. I like the strawberry mousse and chocolate truffle. You could also make protein coffee with the Nectar vanilla. I like the IDS vanilla cinnamon protein powder that Vitalady carries for my coffee.

Protein Coffee-

Brew a pot of coffee (decaf or reduced caffeine)
In a blender bottle with wire ball, blend 4 oz of milk (soy, almond, skim or whatever) with a scoop and a half of protein powder.

Pour the protein slurry into a huge mug and top it off with coffee. Stir and enjoy.

Do you know how your other labs are? Get a copy for your self and start a spreadsheet to track them.

If your iron and ferritin are a little low, start an iron supplement. One of the best you can take is carbonyl iron and Vitalady carries a chewable and a capsule version called Tender iron.

See if you can get your labs and post the vitamins and minerals here. We can help you with vitamins to help bring them up. Also see if they order PTH (parathyroid hormone). It goes with calcium and D3. You want to see your calcium around 9.2, D3 around 100 and PTH around 30. If your D3 is low now, you might want to increase you calcium as you are increasing your D3.

I have more but I'd really like to see your labs.

Gina, I'm awaiting for all my labs to come in, but so far, my calcium was 9.9, PTH 10, and vit D isn't back yet. I'm hoping that it will be higher than the 39 pre-op value, since I have been supplementing with liquid D3 10,000 units daily. Is the PTH too low?

PTH is lower than I've seen but what is the range listed by your lab? It might just be that I haven't seen the scale your lab is using. I'm wondering if it's a typo or lab error. You might be going back for a PTH and calcium re-do once your doc sees it.

The calcium is higher than I like seeing as well and that could all be because the D3 was low. That's also why the low PTH doesn't make any sense.

Probably will make more sense when the D comes in. The PTH Intact range used by the lab is:

10-65 pg/ml. Maybe, the PTH is low, because the calcium is on the high side? The last calcium level that I had a few months ago, was also 9.9.

Hmm...normally high calcium + low D3 =  high PTH. You fix high PTH with more calcium supplements, which actually brings the calcium into line near 9.2, and add more D3.  Let's wait and see the D3 when it comes in.

D3 at 8? You want to get that number up pronto. I would try Vitalady's 50,000IU dry D3 daily for 60 days and retest. You want D3 coming in near top of the range. Don't take an oil-based D prescription.

I'm still wondering if the low-ish PTH is a lab error or something.
