Thanks.  I'm going to bring that and the guidelines from the bariatric society that says that children's vitamins are not appropriate for us.

She's probably treating you like a proximal RNY when you're more in between a medial (300cm common channel) and a distal (100cm common channel). So, that's why I suggested you supplement like a DSr for a few months and see where you come out on your next labs. You might be able to cut back, which is a whole hell of a lot easier than bringing stuff. up.

She doesn't even give good advice for a proximal RNYer much less a person with more malabsorption.  I have already decided that I won't go by any advice she gives me.
I have a question, though.  I just had a complete labwork done using the list I believe from Vitalady and I looked at her recommendations for the levels she would like to see and most of my labs were spot on.  The only one that wasn't in the range she likes was my Vitamin A, which was 51 and I think she likes it closer to the top of the range so I plan on supplementing that.  The main problem I have is that many of those tests were never tested before so I have no idea about trends but of the ones that had been done before most have been trending upwards, with the exception of my ferritin and hct and hemaglogin so I am going to start iron supplements.  In fact, my Bs were over the range.  My B1, B6 and B12 were too high.  I'm not worried about that since that isn't toxic.  Anyway, the question I have is that given my labs don't have any real red flags is there any reason I can't keep the status quo and see where they are at in 6 months?  I am adding the A and iron but other then that do I really need to take all the others?   Of  course I will add them as needed but do I need to start now?

I'd add as you plan. What were your Calcium, PTH and D3?  Looking at Vitalady's targets, are they spot on?

CALCIUM, PLASMA (LAB) 8.9 8.6 - 10.2 mg/dL
PTH, SERUM 34.0 15.0 - 75.0 pg/mL
VITAMIN D 25 HYDROXY 74 30 - 80 ng/mL

I am increasing my calcium, too.  I forgot to say that but the others seem to be ok.

Yep, they look ok except calcium is a little low. So, calcium, D3, A, reduce the B-complex to maybe one a week or see how you do with just your multi, cut back a tiny bit on the B12 and 2 adult multivitamins.

Did you say you were getting a dexa scan soon?

I had it last week.  Osteoporosis in my hips :(

Well, crap! I have it in my neck and osteopenia in the other spots. They put me on calcium, boron, vitamin K2, magnesium, estrogen and Fosamax. I was osteopenic pre-op so I can't blame my malabsorption. I had perfect labs when they diagnosed me. Ginger is talking about her success with an injectable osteoporosis drug, Forteo, on Vitalady's grads board. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Graduate-OSSG/messages

On my next visit my pcp and I will talk about treatment options.  I have osteopenia in the other places, too.  I didn't have a DexaScan pre op but I had one in 2006 and of course it has gotten worse since then.

Wow, I was just reading Ginger's post.  I am definately going to ask my doctor about Forteo.
