Sensitive Question... for me anyway.

I'm all jazzed, excited, raring to go in on Wednesday morning!!  HOWEVER, I guess there's an element of stress going on that I wasn't owning up to.  My body spotted it though and I'm developing a stinkin' cold sore... but "down there" ya know?  I don't see how it would interfere, not even with the catheter since they'll be wearing gloves and it's off to the side, but is that something that could make the surgeon postpone?

Pleeez pleeez pleeez say No.  I don't even want to mention it to them!!!!!   LOL

Ruthie, you need to tell them. That's not something that is going to go away overnight.

Correct that it won't go away overnight Liz but, mine never follow the process of the kind that we see on lips or noses.  No blisters, no scabs.  Just a barely visible area under the skin about 1/4 inch long and 1/8 inch wide that is sensitive to touch.  There's no fever associated with it.

One of the issues is, since they are stress-related for me, there's no predicting that there would be a time one would NOT appear before surgery.  I've searched the OH site, googled and yahoo'ed all over the place since 8PM, and am unable to find a single reference to it being a reason for surgery to be canceled, or a reference connecting it to surgery at all.

It doesn't make sense to me that it would make any difference since it's location is not the area where the surgery is being done.  i wouldn't have mentioned it when I had my rotator cuff repair... but, that was outpatient and no catheter.  That's the only difference that has caused me to doubt whether it's all good or not.. the catheter.  I don't want them to cancel just because they think they must be uber cautious.  I'm hoping there might be somebody who has actually heard of this popping up as an issue or question before because, normal guidelines state:

"If you develop a cold, fever, respiratory infection or other illness prior to surgery, please call your doctor or the Surgery Center."

Does this qualify as an 'other illness' or am I being a Nervous Nelly?

I don't think it will make a difference at all in keeping your surgery scheduled but I would definitely mention it!  I always say better safe than sorry.  They may even be able to "treat it", or "cover it" or whatever they need to do if it might be a hinderence!

BEST wishes on your surgery.....I'm so excited for you!  The beginning of the journey is tough but it's such a time of renewal and change!  You'll be thrilled with your decision!

The respiratory, etc is because they don't want you going in with breathing issues when they are going to put you out, or throwing up from a bug, etc.  I don't think it will stop your surgery.  They, well not these drs but others have delivered babies with those around, etc.  But I would let them know.  I'm sure you and your nervous body will do great.  Looking forward to having you on the loser's bench.

I've gotten those before, and like yours never amounted to anything. Never pussed or opened up. Just would go away. Don't think this would interfere, as it isn't 'in' side the body, right?

I wouldnt see this being a problem at all. When they ask if you have any questions, i would just tell them. I had a severe ingrown hair on my whoha the day of surgery, it was a real bad ( I had picked at it and was crusty by then) and they did not worry about it once. They did clean it (while I was asleep) to make sure nothing "contaminated" anything. They told me before surgery that thy would.... I believe it would be ok. Good Luck!

Well Ladies, I thank you, and I'll edit my "going to be absent for a spell" FB message to say,  "Barring any unforeseen cir****tances, I'm having a stomach surgery tomorrow ...."  and leave it at that!

Meanwhile, I'll add to my "not to forget to mention notes" there's the remains of an inflamed splinter site on my right forefinger and a teeny tiiny can't even hardly see it little herpes sore on my left labia.

Egads, you would think at this age I would be over squeamish embarrassment at anything at all.  LOL!!  Guess I better get over it in case I ever go for PS, huh?

Thanks again to all y'all!

Ruthie  you crack me up!  Here is my take on this.......we use what is called "UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS" when handling patients.  So when dealing with bodily fluids we treat all fluids like they are infected.  So the staff treating you will be protected.  However,  I would definitely mention that you are a carrier of the herpes virus when they discuss your medical history.  They may ask you if you are currently experiencing an outbreak at which point I would let them know that you are not but you may have some straggler sores down there so they should be careful........LOL  If you have a real concern about your surgery being canceled because of it I would contactt your surgeons office.  I'm sure they will not cancel tho.....

Thanks Heather!  But, this itsy bitsy teeny weeny hardly can see it even, sore *is* and outbreak to *me*!  hahaha  Thank goodness it doesn't ever get any worse.  Whew!

I will tell them about it so they can be gentle with me.   ;-)

Heck no, I'm not going to give it any more energy by calling the surgeon's office!!  We are right on schedule and preceeding as planned!

Besides, you said they will not cancel so that's good enough for me.  :-)))
