I had to do it today...

I had to put my little princess to sleep.  I walked into the condo after being at my BF's yesterday and it smelled like cat ****   I talked to my son and he said it wasn't like that before he left for school this morning.

For those that don't know the history, she has been messing wherever she wants.  My son told me today that she was trying to crawl all over him on his bed one day and he put her aside 3 times. The 3rd time she got mad and went and messed on his backpack - the whole time looking right at him.  She has left me piles in the middle of my bed on many occasions, sprayed in his room, messed on his clothes, I found piles in the living room... and this has been going on for the better part of a year.  BF's dog comes to visit and she doesn't like that either... and tended to leave me reminders....

She definitely had some behaviorial issues - and I do think she was getting kitty dementia.

When I had her at the vet this morning, the asst was out running my credit card for payment and she went into the back corner of the room and crapped.  That was my final validation I was doing what I had to do.  She then tried to cover it up (on a tile floor).  I really don't think she knew what she was doing.  She would have been 12 this upcoming June.

I spent the night at the condo with her on Saturday night and she slept with me and acted just like she did in the old days.

It was hard - but I just couldn't see dealing with it anymore.  The vet asst asked me if I'd be open to contacting a placement for pets.  Yes, I'd love for her to find a new home, but really, I couldn't justify handing my problem over to someone else.  I really don't think she would have stopped for a new owner.  The mess in the corner of the vets office just made it more real....

I adopted her when I lived in Virginia and brought her back home with me.  I've had her for 5 years... and she had been very good company and a good friend.  I'll miss her.

((((((((((((((Jody)))))))))))))))))))))), I am so sorry. Putting a furbaby to sleep is one of the hardest responsibilies a parent has to do. But it's also one of the most loving, final act you can do to let them know you love them enough to let them go on to the Rainbow Bridge:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I'm really sorry to hear this Jody!  I've always said that when my cat(s) get incontinent regularly, its time for them to go.  I have an almost 19 year old cat (and an 11 and 3 yo as well) and the old guy is getting around ok but slow and we have noticed a pee smell a couple of times, but couldn't pin it on any of them for sure (and it may have been an old empty can of beer that gets a ripe smell sometimes too).  In any event, they are like a member of the family and it's always sad!

When I brought her back from VA to MI, she was introduced to the other cat and the dog in the house.  Well... between the 2 cats, I couldn't deternine who was making such a mess in the basement.  Once I separated her from the other pets, I didn't have any other problems with her for quite awhile.  When I adopted her I was told she would do best being the only pet.  I see that now.  She did befriend the dog - they pretty much ignored each other, but she couldn't get over the other cat in the house.  I know what you mean when you say its hard to determine who's making the mess....

Then I went to my ex's place to drop of my paperwork because he's going to do my taxes and I always enjoy seeing the dog.  He's over 15 now and its sad.  I'm not sure he knew who I was... and he went to the back door and didn't make it in time to open it and he pee'd on the floor and rug.  I feel bad for him too... He finally figured out who I was but went and laid down on the other rug before I left.  So I'll have to go through this again probably within the year.

Thanks for the Hugs.

I am so sorry, HUGE HUGS coming your way. It is not an easy decision and sometimes tugs harder on your heart than a human. ( sad to say but true) It will get easier in time and I do believe I will be doing it before too long myself. Sending hugs!!

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.  My husband's dog died in my arms a year ago and I really do believe it is as bad as losing a human.  Take time to grieve.
