Saw my PCP today for an after surgery check

My surgeon told me to get with him about my insulin, etc...

1) I've lost 15 lbs since I saw him a month ago (pre-op)

2) I told him that a week ago I took myself off my insulin pump and why. He agreed it was a wise move. That chasing the few highs I've been having were much easier than the lows I had just prior to coming off my insulin pump. To keep using my sliding scale for any real highs (I do that if my blood sugar is over 150).

3) Told him I had cut back on my diabetes med, metformin from 2000 mgs a day to 500 mgs a day and was cutting the pills in half (I had 1000 mg pills). He agreed that was a wise thing to do and until I ran out of that bottle, just to cut them. IF I need to continue them after that, he will give me a new prescription for smaller pills.

He told me I seem to know what I was doing and to just monitor myself very carefully and if I needed him to do anything let him know.

He was quite pleased with my progress and not a BIT overwhelmed with the amount of vitamins I had on my list, LOL And I had ALL of them listed.

yay Liz!  I'm glad it went well!  The one thing most docs will agree on is that diabetes patients know what they need better than the docs do........LOL  Well at least the diabetics who take care of themselves........LOL

He did ask me if I had a goal weight in mind, told him I was aiming for between 120-130 and he seemed to think that was reasonable for me cause he didn't try to argue that it was too high or too low.

Yeah, I like it when I have pcp's or any doc's who are trainable...I've had a few who think they know me better than I do and head off in the wrong direction, esp when it involves my diabetes care. I've fired a few over that one. Usually for not allowing me to test ENOUGH to suit me. They think testing TWICE a day is enough, I test anywhere from 6-10 times a day. We usually butt heads there. I just wish there was an easier way to test than the fingers...at least a reliable one. :)

Good for you!  You'll be very successful with being so pro-active on all your medical care, including your vitamins!

Glad things went well.  Sounds like you've got a good surgeon.

Congratulations Liz.  Sounds like you are doing great.  I know getting off the diabetes meds was one of my big reasons for WLS.  I hope that one day soon you can get off of all of them.

Congratulations, this is one of my biggest goals as well to put my diabetes in remission. The weight loss is important as well, but I've known so many people that went blind, lost limbs, or died from other complications brought on by diabetes. One of my employees that retired about 10 years ago diabetes was out of control, he was blind within a year of retirement, had lost both of his legs within 4 years, and died about 5 years out. I want to put an end to my diabetes, and live long enough to enjoy retirement, travel and see the country, live an active lifestyle, and just have fun.

Liz,
I have Kaiser Southern California, and the DS isn't offered so of the three WLS offered RNY, VSG, and Lap Band, my best option is the RNY.  I have all of my test done, lost 35 lbs, and am just waiting on the referral from Kaiser to see the surgeon.  Hopefully will know more in two weeks.

Martin, there are others on the DS board who have Kaiser and got the DS. You just have to appeal it. Diane Cox has the info on that. If you are really interested in it and would prefer it if you could get it, then post on the DS board and request help.
