Elemental iron is fine, that just tells you how much actual iron is in the pill. What you don't want is anything with Ferrous in the name, so I know the ferrous fumerate is no good. I have never heard of the second one but it does have ferrous in the name, so I would think that is no good either. The 2 best types of iron are Carbonyl iron or Heme iron. Heme is very expensive, so you are best off starting with carbonyl iron. Carbonyl iron needs vitamin C but heme doesn't.
You can get carbonyl iron online at the bariatric sites - I get mine at vitalady.com called Tender irons - they are 60mg capsules and they already have the correct amount of vitamin C in the capsules. These are highly absorbable, easy on the stomach and don't cause constipation. Since taking these (3-4 per day - all in one dose) my ferritin levels have been great. Iron can't be taken within 2 hours of your calcium or thyroid medication
The heme iron is called Proferrin but it is very expensive. If the tender irons don't work, although they work for a most people, then you can try the proferrin or some take a combination of the 2 and find that works for them. The proferrin need to broken in half and taken without vitamin C and can be taken with calcium.
There is a third type of iron that some people take that comes in some prescriptions called Poly iron - it usually comes in the strength of 150mg and works pretty well for some. I would rate it third on the list. This also needs vitamin C
for every 30mg of iron, you need to take 200mg of vitamin C
