Prenatal vitamins?

I was looking around online for different info on RNY and I came across something that said sometimes surgeons recommend patients use PreNatal vitamins.....didn't say why though.  Are their "more"vitamins" in a prenatal?

And Iron...my multi had 100% iron (I take one in am and one in pm)......do I still need a seperate iron supplement?  I also eat red meat w/o any issues.....I guess I'll find out when I do my 3 mnth labs if anything is off kilter....

Prenatal have more than regular do, but ones designed for wls patients are the best. If your multi also have calcium in them, you aren't absorbing all of the iron. Iron and calcium need to be separated by two or more hours to absorb either of them properly.  You will hear alot of advice about vitamins, from people saying a couple of Flintstones are fine to others on the opposite end of the spectrum. I personnally like Celebrate multi, iron, calcium, and B12. I takes a while to drop too low on vitamins, but when it happens, it can hit you pretty hard and it takes a long time to get back. I would say better safe than sorry. I've known too many people who didn't take extra iron or B12 and had life-threatening results years later. B-12 should be sublingual, nose spray, or shots. Pills you swallow or chew aren't absorbed properly.  Look at your labs as you get them, and if you start seeing a trend of something dropping, even if it is still within range, do something about it.  Also note that "in range" for B-12 can be very very low. You want it closer to the top of the range than the bottom. Good luck.

I
hate
Prenatals

they re "upside down" for us. Low in what we need, higher (but not high enough) in other stuff. Over all, they are not a complete vitamin.

I would never say something that strong about any brand name, but PN's are just a type of product.

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

Keep in mind that at this point you're malabsorbing at the max. Red meat is a good thing but you're still malabsorbing the protein.

Another thing to remember is that surgeons have no training in vitamin supplementation. All they're only taught about over dosing not supplementing to maintain optimal health and none are taught how to help a WLS patient maintain optimal health in medical school. They pick up what they know just like we do.

Here's what I think I know. Bariatric designer vitamins work for some folks with additional supplementation on top of the basics. There is no one size fits all. You have to learn how to read your vitamin and mineral labs and how to tweak your vitamins to bring levels up or let too high ones go down, but not crash. I tried my surgeon's vitamin recommendations and they did not work for me. I tried Vitalady's plan it did work for me. I can tweak the individual vitamins and minerals following her plan.

Here's a link to her plan for RNY. Your surgeon and all his staff will tell you it's overkill but they only care about if you crash your labs or get way way to high. It's not overkill.

If you have Office for Mac, they will work fine. The PDF one will work as well. If you do not have Office for Mac, let me know. I have a Mac myself and these work.

I take a multi vitiman that has calcium (but it's carbonate so body doesn't absorb) and iron....but I also take a seperate vitamin that has 100% iron and no calcium...so I think I'm covered (taken at seperated times of the day).

I'd just never heard the prenatal vitamin suggestion before.

I feel like I am popping pills ALL.DAY.LONG!!
