I often thing the same thing.......I'm not an RN but I do work in health care....I have been considering going to school to be a personal trainer as well.  My surgeons office offers a personal trainer as well......I've just never looked into it.......HMMMM....I'm gonna make a call this week and see what they have to say!  I know they are very big into staffing thier offices with post op WLS patients as well.  It's too bad the only NUTS they have have never been obese in thier lives!  I think any NUT working in a bariatric clinic should have to be a SUCCESSFUL post-op!!!!!

I agree!!!!

Funny health care story......We have nutritionist in our hospital (of course)...and about 2 years ago a decision was made that they would round on ALL patients with a BMI over 30.  Including the moms that just delivered their babies.  I am the OB manager...so I asked the nutritionist (who is sweet as pie..but rail thin and has never had a weight problem)...what did she hope to gain by doing this.  I got the "let them know what their BMI is and how unhealthy this is" talk.  My reaction was...DO NOT EVER come into my room with that info unless it directly relates to the reason I am in the hospital....does she not understand that fat people KNOW they are fat????  She was taken aback that I would feel so strongly about this.  I told her...come one...these are new moms...they still have a baby belly and baby weight...they also have hormones raging and they are trying to enjoy the baby...and you think it is a good idea to tell them something they already know...nd make them feel miserable?????  We don't see her on the OB floor anymore unless we have a diabetic paitent.

Good for you!  One of our guiding principles at the hospital I am employed at is this....
PROVIDING HEALTH CARE AS IT OUGHT TO BE.......
And that my dear is what you did.......you have to look at the WHOLE patient and make a determination of what is good information to provide and what is not......and telling a new mom she is fat is certainly not provindg health care as it ought to be!!

I don't see my nut because my Kaiser is the one plan fits all and it sux.  She doesn't listen, she lets you talk, then says the same thing to everyone.  Very unhelpful for me.  She insists on eating 3x a day, no snacks, no protein supplements.  The vitamin routine is very basic as well with 1 multi, calcium and a B12.

I am so grateful for OH and for what I learn here.

I do wonder if I followed their plan to the T with no protein supplements and never snacking etc, would I be at goal now?  It's so easy to fall into the "bad girl" syndrome.

Lee, I am so sorry that your NUT sux. I have had good experiences with the dieticians at Fremont. I spoke with one the other day, and she said that if the snack is PLANNED, it is okay to have one in the afternoon or prior to working out. They just don't want us grazing all day. I don't really need one in the AM. They do want us to get most of our protein from food sources, rather than liquid, but if we are meeting our protein goal of at least 80grams of protein, then they don't want us to drink our calories. If we cannot meet our protein goal, then supplementing with a protein drink at the end of the day is recommended.

I still like a premier shake in the AM, but I am going to try some yogurt , cottage cheese, or an egg. Solid food stays with me longer.

As far as vitamins, 2 multi-vits/day (comparable to Centrum), at least 4,000 units of D3, iron (if recommended by MD), B12, at least 1500 mg of Calcium/day, B vitamin of at least 100 % of the daily requirement (if not able to tolerate a B vitamin, then at least take B1 Thiamin).

I also have a tall skinny latte a few days of the week. My new addiction.

Thanks, I know that our programs are so different.  I get 90 % of my protein from food but have an occasional protein pudding.  I rarely have a shake these days.

I would like every program that treats all their patients regardless of surgery type as if they had RnY and smack them upside the head. Any surgeon who says someone with a VSG can't take NSAIDs gets two smacks.

AMEN to this. Mine does exactly this, it's like, regardless of surgery, you follow the RNY rules with ONE exception, how long your post op liquid phase is, but second phase is still pureed (excuse me, I can do soft foods).
