Good Morning. Don't believe everything you hear and only half of what you see
What would you like to hear and see?
I'd like to see a bariatric NUT line up all her patients for the past 10 years and just look at them. Then, ask each one if they are following all her rules (yes or no). Of those that have maintained 90% EWL, ask them what they did to lose and what they do to maintain...AND incorporate their answers into her program but don't make a one-size-fits-all program.
I'd like her to do exactly the same thing with her patients' COMPREHENSIVE labs. Of those patients who have OPTIMAL labs, ask them what they had to do to get their labs up and what it takes to keep them there...AND incorporate their answers into her program but acknowledge there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer to vitamins either but she better damn sure know what optimal labs are vice labs barely in range.
I'd like bariatric surgeons to have to learn all the WLSs and pass rigorous tests before they can take their "show on the road". If they don't have the skill to do all of them and have a full understanding of how they work surgically and nutritionally, they flunk.

Yes yes yes! At least my nut is finally getting it, but the senior NP at the surgeon's office isn't. So I try to deal with the junior and the nut whenever possible.

I whole heartedly agree with you Gina about the cookie cutter approach!!........Even if I'm "one of those" health care workers.....LOL I don't think WLS is a one size fits all process. I'm going to do my part by starting the VITALADY progrram to show my surgeon the benefits of her program. I'm lucky in that I think my surgeon and the program I use LISTENS to thier patients and what works for them and then shares that information with other patients. If you can SHOW them that what you are doing is working they WANT to know all about it! Now if only the rest of the bariatric community would get on board!
As far as surgeons learning all the procedures that is a great idea. My surgeon first mastered his skills and revolutionized laproscopic WLS within the program and now all of the surgeons perform thier procedures Lap unless a complication arrises. He could probably perform a RNY or Lap-band with his eyes closed. He's been doing them for years with a fantastic surgical success rate. He is now performing the VSG and I'm sure will become highly efficient at that as well.....So what I'm getting at is YES they should learn all the procedures......BUT IMO I see nothing wrong with mastering one before you attempt another.
As far as NUTS go until the bariatric programs take us and line us up they will never have the information they need to provide optimal education for bariatric patients.
HERE IS WHAT I WANT....
I'd like to see personal training programs that focus on obtaining the best results for the bariatric patient. But again that stems to NUT education.......LOL
Damn NUTS.........they need to be cracked!!
Have a great day!

I would LOVE to work with a personal training program that incorporated all aspects of after care. This would include nutritional services, exercise advis e& monitoing of body fat and fitenss levels as well as covering the psycological issues. I would PAY MONEY for this even!!!
Also, I am an RN (I have worked in OB for my entire career)...but I am trying to think of a way I might be able to contribute to weight loss paitents sucess. I would love to find a job in a WLS office and offer more than just the routine stuff a nurse does in the office (asking 5000 questions and taking vital signs). I am still thinking about it :)
