"Antacids – decrease B12, iron, calcium absorption and protein digestion."

IF this is a true statement wouldn't this impact the MANY WLS patients who live on antacids negatively?  I don't take antacids but I know many RNY patients who are perscribed them to be taken daily forever after sugery weather they are having issues or not.  Assuming this statement is true doesn't that put them at a higher risk of deficiancies for no reason??

Yep, if they're taking them throughout the day, like Tums in the old days. I think takng a prescribed antacid away from your vitamins is a good idea, then you just go by your labs and supplement accordingly. Again, one size vitamin plan doesn't fit all and I have a feeling those patients weren't supplementing enough to begin with.

Thanks Gina!  I knew I could count on you..........LOL  This is part of the plan at a facility that says NO PROTEIN SHAKES TOO!!!.......WTH is going on out there!  This goes back to studying thier patients.....BUT to the defense of the bariatric programs.......how much truth do you think they are really getting from thier patients.  Many people walk through the doors and LIE LIE LIE because they don't want to "get in trouble".....so they are definitely working with A LOT of misinformation.  I think if you stray away from "the Plan" then you need to be honest about it.....who cares about the dirty looks or the guilt.......if you're successful then help get these programs changed......eventually they will start listening!

The low protein may be the culprit and not the antacids. If they aren't drinking super absorbable protein shakes, their protein and albumin may be low, which also contributes to not being able to absorb vitamins properly. These guys may have been on Flintstones, 600mg of calcium and no iron until deficient. That would indicate under supplementing and low protein...not a good combo.

I'm not the vit/min person at all but I think what most of us take, prilosac or something like that, works in a way different way than tums and the old anitacids.  Maybe antiacids do, but the acid reducers don't.

That's what I think they're referring to. Look at the dates of the studies they cite. Surgeons were telling WLS people to take TUMS back then.

I'll chime in on the drug front, the antacids containing calcium and/or aluminum can bind up and therefore decrease absorption of other drugs. However unless a drug/vitamin/protein depends on acid in the stomach to digest, prilosec/prevacid/aciphex/protonix/zantac/pepcid etc shouldn't be an issue.

"decrease B12, iron, calcium absorption and protein digestion"

Let's look at each one:

B12 - RnY people can't absorb it in the tummy, that's why you guys take it sublingally, right?

Calcium - lots of forms of calcium do require an acidic environment to be absorbed. That's why we're supposed to take calcium citrate, which doesn't.

Protein - when I heard this, I went off my PPI. My protein levels didn't increase. I'm still off my PPI because I don't need it, but I think it protein absorption is a complex issue with lots of factors.
