Woozy Workout?
I posted this message on Menu and Miles but it was too late in the day. I would love your advice. Thanks. Amy
Hi, everyone! I had a great workout today with my trainer but I felt woozy afterwards. I had a protein shake and a half of pure protein bar before the workout, but it must not have been enough. I also checked my BP on the way home at the grocery store and it was 103/60. I better start tracking it. I may need to adjust my meds.
My trainer told me that it would be good to add a banana on the days that we are working out together. He is concerned that I will not access the protein quick enough for fuel. What do you all think of that?
Thanks.
Amy

I would be concerned that you are experiencing a side effect of one of these
A) Dehydration
B) Have low blood sugar
C) B12 levels are low
All of these things can affect your blood pressure which is probabaly low at the time you are feeling woozy. I wouldn't trust the grocery store readout of your BP...those macines are usually garbage! The banana will give you a spike in your bloodsugar and some fast fuel during your workout. You should try it to see if it helps.

Within an hour before a hard workout, I make sure to get in some good carbs. Like tomorrow, I will go on a long run, I will eat oatmeal an hour before it. I will also drink a coffee/protein drink at some point before it too. You have to fuel your workouts or your body will get weak.
I would also check your meds if you are on blood pressure medication. Most people I know can ditch those shortly after surgery.
Take care of yourself and good job on getting to the gym!

This is a tough one because we are told that carbs are a no no....I was always able to do without carbs when working out before goal....but once my BMI got normal and I worked out hard I sometimes would get faint and dizzy....I test it still sometimes and see if it will happen and it does...
If you are working out with a trainer you are probably doing weights which for some reason tax your body more than cardio and often afterwards we feel shaky and weak....so I would recommend CARBS before your workout to give your body extra energy...your body stores might not be enough....I usually have half a banana in my shake...yes half...only...how compulsive am I ?
but you can also have some gatorade if that makes it less like eating carbs...after your workout eat good easily digested protein within the HOUR of working out and you should be OK.....carbs after are not necessary ....good luck and I understand the low blood sugar thing because I have it too...
Your trainer sounds very good....keep up the good work...SEAVIEW

Thanks for the helpful advice, everyone. I have emailed my PCP and am tracking my BP at home now. I think I will try a 1/2 banana before meeting my trainer next time. I am really good about liquids so I am taking dehydration off the list.
It was just so weird - I felt like I could faint for a second there. I have so much excess energy (stored as fat), but I guess my body needs a little boost when I weight train.
