Just because you have RNY doesn't mean you are going to be a bag of bones.  The RNY does have a little more kick as a tool to help you lose wieght, but it isn't like you are going to have surgery and just drop 100 pounds without doing anything else. Most people who have the RNY still have to work really hard to lose all the wieght they want to. I think in deciding between the sleeve and rny, you should think about what your eating habits are, what are your triggers, and then decide if you could be successful with just restrictive wls or if you need some malabsorbtion too.  I love my rny and would not have been successful with the sleeve, but I know others who have been very successful with the sleeve. It's very individual and personal choice, but I don't think the possibility of losing too much wieght is really and issue with those two choices.  Good luck

I agree with AMYH-M. Some of us need more malabsorption and some just need restriction. I'm a grazer, so I needed the DS. Some RNYr folks need their sugar issue fixed and the RNY does that. Some folks only need to restrict the volume they eat, so the VSG or band may be enough. Your eating demons should be addressed by whatever WLS you choose.

Good luck!

Don't worry too much, I was 197,5'2 on the morning of my surgery and I'm now bouncing between 118 and 120. I don't think I dropped super fast and I can tell my body is starting to level off now. I'm definitely not in fear of being too skinny. I'm actually worried I won't lose that little extra so I will have room for some bounce back. Mostly I think our bodies know where we should be and adjusts. Just my opinion based on what I have read here.

see the doctor said rny or sleeve would do for me. we did talk about the sleeve I asked her which one would last the longest she said the rny cause the sleeve stretch more in time. the eatting issue is i love carbs and sugar. In the beginning i was all about the rny and than one of my friends said you should look in to the sleeve cause it would be better for you. cause all of lack of malnutrition and vitamin deficiency and stuff like that . and thats true i dont want all of that and when you got older you need all the nutrition that you will got. what im worry about is malnutrition and vitamin deficiency and the hair loss and i dont want to be loss than 100 lbs really. and i have to get the cheap vitamin and protein. I dont know i want the best if im going to do it i better get the best one ! any help please I just dont want to mess up on any wls..

If your problems are sugar and refined carbs then you need to address that before surgery. No WLS will work if you eat those in excess. Even with malabsorption you would still absorb them 100%. You can't count on dumping with the RNY because only 30% of people do. The problem with the RNY is that the malabsorption of calories only lasts about a year but the vitamin malabsorption lasts forever. You don't have to worry about that with the sleeve but there are concerns about the long term effectiveness of the sleeve since it has only been a stand alone procedure for a relatively short period of time. Your sleeve and your pouch can both stretch out if you overeat. I wish I could give you better news but no WLS is perfect, just maybe perfect for you.

Hair loss is common to all surgeries.

Not all insurance will approve the sleeve.  Mine would not.  Luckily, I love my rny and have been very happy.

I'm going to sound like a Scrooge here, and I'm really not.

You've posted this on several boards. If you are this unsure about which surgery is best for your own individual needs, and WHY it is the best surgery for YOU, and also how YOU will manage the requirements of living after surgery, you may not be ready for a mid-February surgery date.

Please consider taking a bit more time and really talking to people who started with stats and issues similar to yours before making up your mind. One of the DSers frequently posts on the main board with the title "Think twice, cut once" which is excellent advice. You really need to understand how each surgery you're considering works before you commit to it.

(((hugs))) You will make a good choice for yourself and your daughters - just give yourself a bit more time, please.

from someone who went through with the sleeve, and did lots of research both my self and with Dr's. I am not sure where or who told you the sleeve will stretch it doesn't. They remove the part of the stomach that is able to stretch. All I can say is do your research before going into any surgery, and realize you have to change and use which ever as a tool to make any of them work.
