My mother is not doing good.  She has dementia and has been in a care home and they are not handling her very well and calling my sister all the time.  I guess her doctor said something about her needing hospice help.  Anyway, my sister is burned out and can't deal with it any more.  They are in California and I am in Oregon and I can't do much.  My sister wants to put her in a home that can take care of her but doesn't seem to know which way to turn.
I don't know what I can do.  I told her that if she gave me the information I would check out her insurance and what they will pay for.

I'm sorry you're going through this.  Tag team with old parents works great.  My mom had very advanced altzheimers before she had a stroke and my dad was on dialysis for 4 years until he passed away at 91 yrs old.  My brother did all of the paperwork, phone calls etc and i concentrated on the more emotional side of it all.  You are very lucky to have your sister to go through this with.  You need all the support you can get, and so does she.

I'll swing some critters for all of you!

I'm so sorry your family is struggling with this Laura!  I think your offer to handle the "red tape" aspect of your mothers care is HUGE!  Even though you can't be there to offer physical care you can help take care of all that stuff that is so time consuming!  i wish you and your family the best and I hope you are all able to find a compromise that will help you keep your stress overload to a miniumum!

praying all goes well.  i can tell you i've been where you are and it is certainly not something i'd wish on anyone!  in going through all this myself.....and i am a Medicaid Eligibility Specialist in Georgia....i deal with the elderly/disabled every day.  you need to check with the Dept of Human Services in California to see what type of Medicaid they could offer and what their income and resource limits are.  and....if she goes into a hospice facility (instead of a nursing home), medicare pays in house hospice facility 100%.  feel free to add me as a friend and send me a message if you need mej!

best wishes,
Blessings,  J

Thank you.  I added you as a friend.  My sister has taken a few days off from dealing with this so I won't get started until next week.  I'll let you know if I need any advice.

This is so tough!  Check with your company or your husband's.  They might have an Employee Assistance Program.  These are companies that help when things are getting stressful.  They can give you great advice on managing elder care and your situation.

I totally agree with Jennie.
The laws on health care and services availible change dramatically from one state to another.  I can tell you what to do in NC, as Jennie can in her state, but that may have no relavence to Ca.  The thing to remember is everytime you talk to someone, get their name and number and what they say.  That way when you get conflicting information, you will know where it came from.  Here there are homes or nursing homes that specialize in dementia.  The DEpt of Social Services or their equivlent should be able to help.
I'm swinging for you all.  It is a rough situation to be in.
