Eating and Drinking

Well, not totally.  I am looking for some suggestions please.  I eat the small measured portions and am having no issues, I chew, chew, chew.  My challenge is about 5-10 minutes after I eat, I need to drink.  I have a small sip, not a gulp or anything further for about 30-45 mins.  I feel so darn thirsty.
Any thoughts on how I can forego this as I was told to not drink for 30-45 mins after eating, no exceptions?

You have your pyloric valve so there's no physical reason not to drink a few sips after a meal. If you're supplementing enough, there's also no reason to think you're washing nourishment out of your sleeve prematurely will harm you. Vet VSGrs, please correct me if I'm wrong.

From what my surgeon said, it's not a matter of nutrition, it's a matter of satiety. If you drink while eating, the food becomes more of a "slider" and you don't feel full as long, whereas if you don't, it becomes a thicker paste in the stomach and takes longer to pass through the pylorus. I'm not on solids yet, so I have no idea if this is true or not, but I do notice that soft/liquidy foods do not sit in my stomach very long.

Satiety makes since. I'm so afraid of stretching my sleeve I stay on protein shakes to deal with satiety and keep my sleeve small. I see people who get all their protein from food stretching their volume capacity so fast. Scares me.

I admit I don't know a whole lot about the DS since I knew for certain I did not want a malabsorbtive procedure, but do they make the sleeve the same size for a DS as they do for a VSG? My surgeon makes one of the smaller sleeves, so I'm not horribly concerned about stretching. If all I can eat 1,2 or 3+ years out is about 1c of food at a time, I'm good. I used to eat WAY more than that at a time. :)

I'm having a very hard time with protein shakes. I think I am somewhat lactose-intolerant since surgery since milk and whey protein isolate make me super nauseous and kind of dizzy or like I need to rest. Cheese is ok, cottage cheese is not great but not as bad as shakes/milk, fresh mozz is great, and greek yogurt is just fine. No soy either as soy interferes with thyroid hormone production, so that leaves me looking for a protein supplement. I found an egg one since eggs sit ok and and that seems to be sitting relatively well in my sleeve. However, I am eating more often than I was supposed to because I was trying to get as much protein in while I looked for other shake/drink sources. I don't think I've stretched it out, though. My capacity is about the same as when I started mushy/soft foods.

My surgeon makes the sleeves using a 60f bougie. I think my stomach is short too and I still have more restriction at 3 years as some DSr folks have at 3 months out, and I want to keep that way. lol

I hope your lactose intolerance will ease over time. The JayRobb egg shakes are a great option and eggs are high on the bio-availability scale. I think as long as we're not eating to full at every meal, we won't do ourselves a disservice by stretching our sleeves.

It will be 1 yr since surgery for me on 2/1/11 and it is still a struggle for me not to drink for at least 30 minutes after a meal.  I just rarely do it, I make myself wait.  If I eat something that I just have to drink, I will take a tiny sip and wait.  I don't think I will ever get used to not drinking while I eat, but I just have to do it.  I drink a lot in between meals. Good luck, it will become habit after a while!

Oh! I didn't pay attention to the fact that your surgery was different from mine.  My nut says that it is to keep me from getting hungry too soon and also to prevent dumping.

I have an RNY so different from U  but the way i handle it  is i drink BEFORE  I eat  .. at least one glass full  .

That  keeps my mind off water for at least the required 30-45  minutes post meal .
