OK, I'm 10 days post op and since day 1, I've been itchy.  They were rationing the benadryl rather than the morphine in the hospital.  It comes and goes ... got any suggestions?

I took Loritab after my TT scar revision, and it made me itchy.  Funny though, it didn't when I had the TT...

Once I stopped the pain meds it went away.... are you still on pain meds?

No pain meds since I got home from the hospital ... in general, I've been known to get hives when I get stressed, no hives this time,  just itchy.

Amy, If you haven't called your surgeon yet I would do that.  It sounds like you are having a slight allergic reaction from something!  I'd hate for you to be having a reaction that could take a turn for the worst!  Could it be a suture they used?  Keep us posted!

I agree with Heather, I broke out in massive hives and ended up needing the breathing treatments ( I am asthmatic). Found I was allergic to Lortab and the glue that the Dr used to put me back together. Good Luck.

That sounds awful, Stacey!

Amy, I'm glad you posted your itchiness question here.  I would never in a million years have thought itching could be related to the surgery.  Call your Doc!

I was going to say pain meds, but I guess that's not it. I don't have any advice, but I hope it goes away soon!

If it is a generalized itching, I would use benadryl. If it is a specific area, like around your incisions, could be that you are allergic to the glue. Topical benadryl might be helpful in that case. It would be safe to take a benadryl, until you hear from your doctor. Benadryl is frequently prescribed for allergic reactions. The pain medication and/ or anesthia could also be a factors (if you were taking the pain medication), as well as plain ole anxiety can cause itchiness and hives. If you take the benadryl, DON"T DRIVE. It tends to make people sedated, which is why they might have been limiting its use, while you were hospitalized. Some diabetics also experience itchiness.

Are you allergic to any foods? If you experience any difficulty breathing, get yourself to the ED.

Thanks, got some children's benadryl and turned the heater off and took a cool shower ... I think I must be sweating out anethesia ... I'm doing better today  once i realized it got worse after I walked and then sat around.   And yes itchiness/hives is a definite stress response for me .... my mom gives me hives :-)

I had an allergic reaction to the glue and it made my entire mid-section itch. The doc gave me a topical steroid and Atarax...it took care of it in one day!
