Reminder: Rome was not built in a day

Hi All,

Just a reminder: Research shows that it takes 21 occurances of a task for it to become "routine". That means that on one hand, if you made a resolution, you really need to dedicate yourself to getting through the initial growing pains. On the other hand, it will become a natural part of your life in a short peroid of time!!

While you can apply this logic to anything, it's particularly useful to exercise and fitness. The common excuses:

1. I don't have time.
Make time. This is a prioirty. You can't be sucessful in the loooooong term without some form of activity. Even if you can maintain weight loss (which most can't), you need to strengthen your bones, your heart, etc. What can you remove from your life, 3 hours a week, to make this a priority. Schedule it in! Don't wait for it to happen.

2. It's painful.
That's because it's new silly!! Once that initial shock goes away, exercise will pump you full of endorphins. You'll manage stress better, be more focused, sleep better,...I could go on!

3. I hate it/it's not fun.
Well, find something that is! I have to do a little bit of everything so that I don't get bored doing one thing. Are you sporty? Try boxing. Pensive, determined? Try running or cycling. A party girl at heart? Try aerobic dance, like Zumba. New to the scene or have painful joints? Try the eliptical. Also, be sure to add in strength training. It makes a HUGE difference in body shape.

Well, that's it ladies. Make your schedule! Find 21 days that you are going to stick to fitnes. Anyone can get through 21 days, right???

So true!!! I just replied to another post and said it was two weeks of hell. Maybe I get used to a routine faster. In the beginning I was missing workouts because I got too busy, was too tired in the afternoon, etc. So I made myself get up before the rooster to work out. I go to bed a little earlier, but there is no excuse in the world at 3:30 or 4:00a.m. No one else in the house is awake, it is my quiet time, and it starts my day in such a positive way!

DH and I were recently discussing his family (all MO) and their excuses of joint pain, etc. not to work out. Their joint pain would improve so much if they would get some of the weight off! All the extra weight is worse on your joints than exercise! It's hard work, especially in the beginning, that's why it's a "work"-out, not a "rest"-out! You just have to fight through it.

I'm right with you, Katie.  I remember how hard it was to get myself to start.  Starting is the problem, I think, sometimes more than keeping it going.

For me, the hardest part of my workout is getting to the gym.  Not because it's far (it's across the street) it's the mental exercise of preparing myself to do it.  Not sure what that's about.

BUT, once I get there, after my warmup and I'm just in the zone with cardio, I feel like a million bucks.  Now that I'm smaller, it's easier for me to experience a runner's high, and it is that high that carries me through the day.

My gym's latest slogan is "Sex, Gym & Rock & Roll".  It makes sense.  Gym, for those of us who've figured out how to become devotees, can become like a drug.  A good one.  I guess.  I've actually never taken drugs.  But you get the idea...

I am starting in with the gym tonight, ( I did not get a family membership and my little one is home sick today) I am so ready to get out there and start working on it, will it be painful YES! Will it help with my depression YES! Will it ease my joint pain? I dont know but I am determined to push through it and see what happens.

Oh, and don't forget the immortal words of a crazy trainer (that I repeat to myself all the time):

MUSCLE PAIN IS JUST WEAKNESS LEAVING YOUR BODY!

What great timing for this post! Thanks!

I'm headed to the Wellness Center to join tonight!  Going to walk every day after work... I have not done anything routinely in a a long time.  Then I'm off to Target to look for yoga pants or something -- my favorites were ruined during my last attempt at painting the garage...

My daughter is excited (she went on the tour with my husband and I) and wants to get on the treadmill, too!  I told her she will have to wait a few years to join.  I hope she becomes addicted to activity along with me -- she loves soccer and tumbling at pre-school.
