Lightweights and VSG

Hi Friends!
I am having a VSG on Jan 27th and wanted to know how this journey has been for other lightweights. I am currently between 225 and 220 depending on the day. I see lots of success on the VSG boards but many are on a very different journey due to their start weights and I wonder what this experience has been like for others who started around my size. What were those first few weeks like and was your weightloss as rapid and consistent.
Thanks in advance ladies
Jen

Hey Jen!

I'm 2 weeks out today, and the worst problem I had was with acid reflux. Other than that, I have lost 13.5 lbs in the first 2 weeks to put me at 199! :) So yes, it's been pretty rapid, but of course, not like 20-30 lbs like a heavyweight might see. It's been pretty consistent, too. I might drop 2 lbs one day, nothing for a day or two, then 2-3 more.

I won't lie--the post-op diet SUCKS. Protein shakes are turning my stomach right now, only because I feel like "OMG I just can't drink another one of those damn things, WHERE'S THE FOOD?!!" :) But it's not forever, and I am moving to purees/mushies in a couple days.

I'm not having any problems getting in my fluid, though water doesn't sit well still. I'm going to try adding a touch of lime juice as my doctor suggested to see if that helps it sit better. Protein I'm not as worried about at this point, but I get at least 50g every day.

I'm really not having any pain at all--in fact, I was back to light workouts (cleared by my doctor) on day 8 post-op!

Any other questions, feel free to ask! :) I'm sure I missed something.

Hi Jen,
I'm not a sleever, but we have several on here who have had great success!  My only advice is that you be really careful not to compare yourself to others, especially the ones who have had the malabsorptive surgeries.  You have great and valid and important reasons for getting the sleeve, so don't be hard on yourself when you see others who might be pulling in more dramatic #s.  That might happen (though folks like Shannon have had totally quick and amazing trajectories).
What I've noticed is that the LW sleevers have really good success that's steady.  Many (like us malabsorbers) have the dreaded stalls, too, but, as my NUT (and by extension I) like to remind folks, if we lost 3 lbs a week for a year, how much would we weigh???
Anyway, welcome to the LW Board.  We're so glad to have you, and hope we can be helpful along what's going to be a fabulous journey!

Hey Jen, I did not have the sleeve but many of our ladies have and did wonderful. I had RNY this past Thursday and have lost 5 pounds. I started walking 1.2 miles 2 days after my surgery and am feeling very good. You will do great I'm sure. Welcome to the LW boards...you'll get lots of support here!

HI! I have been gone for about a week, but I am trying to catch up today. I had VSG 3/23/09. I completely changed my eating pre-op to follow the post-op diet, combined with 2 weeks of pre-op liquids, and I lost 28 pounds before surgery! I consistantly lost 13-15 pounds a month, and hit goal a few days shy of 5 months. I am now well below my origional goal and have been in maintenance since the beginning of November. I was very strict with my eating and worked out 6 days a week. Now I am able to eat more (volume and variety). I work out 5 days a week, but much harder than before. Feel free to ask any questions!

Hi Jen,

I wish you luck with your new life change. I had VSG on 11/13 and all has been great. Quick recovery and it's like it never happened. I have lost 38 pounds to date and I feel very energized. I am not saying everyday is like cake because there is the mental stress of old habits that bother me but the sleeve only let's me go so far and I have to put in my part.

I would say so far things have been steady. I don't think quick or slow but very consistent. I am very happy.

Best wishes!

Hey Jen! I'm a VSG girl, and am about 3 weeks out. It has been an easy transaction, I was only on liquids 1 week after surgery. I lost 17 lbs at 2 week mark and stopped. Then it picked back up and have lost 6 more. It's hard at times, I still cant figure all the signs for fullness. Good luck it's all worth it! Sherry

Hi there again Jen!

I had my sleeve done on March 15, 2010 and had a very uneventful surgery and recovery.  Of course the first few were hard getting used to everything and learning to get enough liquids and protein but I felt great beginning on day 5 and haven't looked back.  I lost 17 pounds in the first week and I lost my goal amount in 8 months which was 83 pounds (never had a stall either) so on average I lost about 10 pounds per month eating anything and everything that I wanted only in very small portions.  I don't track anything but protein and liquid intake and I eat full fat everything as well as lots of carbs.  This is not typical but I am being honest about what has worked for me.  I feel completely free from the guilt and failure that dieting always brought into my life and it is wonderful. It feels so normal now and I love my tiny tummy and the freedom it  gives me.

Wishing you ALL the best!!

PS  I also have not been a consistent exerciser but this is something I hope to accomplish this year.
