Protein Drink/Powder Recipes
Hello folks on the loser's bench,
None of my WLS friends here in my town (i know 16 WLS folks, most in town here). drink protein drinks regularly-- to a person, they dislike them.
Your success stories all seem to mention protein drinks. Please will you share one or two recipes, and mention the brand and flavor of protein powder you use, or the brand of ready made protein drink? Yes, I know we all have different tastes. And so give me some ideas of where your tastes lie. The one nugget I got from my dearest friend was to mix unflavored powder in Low Sodium V-8 juice or on top of already prepared SF jello.
I have a week of liquid diet before surgery, and I want to buy the protein a little at a time. I ordered 10 samples from vitalady dot com. I made my choices based on having read that soy is chalky. I also recently read we RNYers only absorb the protein from soy, whey, and a couple others. ... yup, i ALREADY forgot what those are (and aren't) argh.
I see the nutritionist (ah, um, the "nut") for my pre-op tomorrow. I'll ask her too, but she ain't "been there, done that, have the unused inedible bottle of protein powder to show for it."

When isolates are what you want to look for post-op. Brand, I don't think, really matters.
I've never found a "ready made" protein drink that I would use solely for my protein supplementation. Either not the right mix of proteins, too many calories or carbs.... Oh - and speaking of which, find protein powders that are around 100 calories a scoop, and low carbs, no sugar... The syntrax nectars and Vit World ones have about 1 carb per scoop and 100 calories.
I like the Syntrax Nectars red grapefruit and fuzzy navel, but immediately after surgery those kinds of tastes were too strong for me. Yes - your tastes WILL change post-op, but it only lasts (or mine did) for about 6 months.
Now - go to my profile and look at my protein recipe blog - hundreds on there. Mostly made like frozen drinks, with a few hot ones thrown in.
You'll also find many of us like "protein coffee". That's basically mixing protein in with your coffee - but if you mix ANY protein in with hot liquid, make sure the liquid is under 130 degrees - otherwise it clumps and gets REAL nasty.
Another way to mix protein coffee is to take your protein and mix completely (like a slurry) in either water or milk, then pour the coffee directly on top. That works too. Lately I've been mixing mine with a little skim milk and I think it mixes better than with water. Protein hot chocolate is good too. You can make hot chocolate from scratch with splenda, or I use diet swiss miss and mix chocolate or vanilla protein in with it. Remember the "hot liquid" rule!!
I buy the Syntrax Chocolate Truffle, but I also like the Whey Isolate(store brand) from Vitaman World. They're about the same price. I also buy their vanilla.
You can also get protein from GNC. They also carry the whey isolates.
There are a LOT of different protein brands out there - and we all mostly have our favorites and they are mostly all different!!
Its a great thing you ordered samples from Vitalady - but honestly, I would just stick with samples until after surgery, because, like I said - your tastes will change. I was able to tolerate GNC chocolate quite well. GNC and Vitamin World (don't know about Vitamin Shoppe) lets you return tubs of protein after they've been opened if you don't like them. I've actually done that.
I also used to mix the unflavored with crystal lite. Thats one of the ones I could tolerate early out. It changes the texture, but the flavor pretty much is the same. I've never really mixed protein with jello and puddings - others have. I do now mix it with unflavored 0% greek yogurt...
Its sad to hear thatthe 16 people you know don't drink protein drinks regularly. So many believe that they will start absorbing protein again after awhile, and while they may some, it will never really ever be what they need. I'm 2 years out and I supplement daily with at least 2 drinks a day, and my protein is just right. I can imagine what it would be if I didn't.
I'm sure others will have some good suggestions! You'll never know until you ask.

Hi Ann-
I personally like Unjury chocolate for protein. I mix it with organic skim milk. I use the organic skim because it tastes a lot richer than plain watery skim. I often heat it in the microwave for a nice hot/warm chocolate drink. And I use it to make protein coffee as well. I prepare mine the way Jody does (in the post above). Everyone is right in advising you not to buy much before your surgery. Your tastes do change a lot.
Good luck!
Kathy

I don't have a lot of money to spend on protein so I just get the Body Fortress from Wal Mart. If you buy on their website right now there is a special for 3 tubs for $35,less then $12 each. I drink about 3 a day so that lasts me for the month. If you are spending $30 or more a tub you can see how it adds up.
To fix them up I use all kinds of things, sugar free pudding mix, sugar free syrups (I get mine at Cash & Carry for $3.88 each, I have about 20 now) peanut flour from Trader Joe's. If you haven't already, check out http://bariatricfoodie.blogspot.com/ and http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/. Lots of good ideas there.
I start the day with a decaf protein coffee. Tomorrow I think I'm going to have a hot vanilla caramel chai protein drink. I use 1/2 cup milk, one scoop of protein powder, about 2 tablespoons of sugar free caramel syrup, a packet of Splenda and shake it up in my blender bottle. I brew a decaf vanilla chai herbal teabag in one cup of water and then I add that to the protein mixture. Yummy.
I would highly recommend buying a blender bottle. They have them at GNC, and a portable blender. Mine is a Hamilton Beach Jr and you can drink from the jar. Crushes ice better then my big blender.
Good luck to you.

Early out, my nut was very specific about brands because they wanted us to have 100% whey isolate. Now we can have any brands, but still look for whey isolate, low sugar/carbs, low or no fat. I use a lot of Nectar Lemon tea, chocolate truffle and latte. I also buy vanilla from Walmart that I am now mixing in my decaf. I usually do 1-2 a day and the first is always 2 cups of decaf with 1 scoop of slurry, like Jody was taking about. Then if it is a low protein day, I'll add a hot chocolate or lemon tea in the afternoon or evening. Since the weather turned cold, I haven't had a cold drink. I even do the Nectar lemon tea hot by making a slurry and adding it to ho****er.

The only ready to drink protein shake I have found that I like is Pure protein. It comes in a can, has good nutrition facts and actually tastes good. Even my daughters have taken sips of mine and like it. I personally don't like the vanilla, but the chocolate and cookies n' cream are great.
I use the GNC Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60 and love it. I almost wish I never would have tried it because I was doing fine with other stuff, but after I tried it, I couldn't choke down anything else. It's expensive, but they have lots of sales and if you get a gold card, you get 20% off the first week of every month. When it's cheap, I stock up!
