Weight loss after one year???

The only time I ever lost a large amount of weight on my own successfully was when I was seeing a weight loss coach in New York.  If I could have afforded to see him weekly for the rest of my life I would probably still be thin today. He was fantastic.  My mother-in-law treated me to a year's worth of sessions with him and I lost 100 lbs. completely on my own. But during that time I didn't have even one morsel of refined carbs, sugar or fat in that year's time. I kept the weight off for 2 years, but then had a spinal cord injury that put me in a weight gain spiral again.  I don't know if Dr. Gullo's method of completely eliminating what you identify to be your "trigger foods" from your diet is realistic, as I look back on it. But I did like a lot of his coaching mantras.  He had several mantras that used to play over in my head, one of which was "If I don't take the first bite, I won't have a problem."  He also coined the phrase "Nothing tastes as good as thin feels," years ago, which has caught on and is used a lot in various forms.

I think what has been quite disheartening lately is the realization that not everyone who has RNY surgery dumps (myself included). I also did not know about slider foods or how carbs are so easy to eat without feeling full. There were no cautionary disclaimers in any of my surgeon's literature on these facts. As Gina said, why would they tell me when they are in the business of selling me a surgical procedure. But it's good that I am getting my head around the surgery's limitations and I feel encouraged by others, like you and like Diana, who have figured out that we can shut the carb cravings off easily enough.  So it's good that I'm getting this reality check now while I am still in the rapid weight loss phase so I can do what I need to do to get the most benefit from the surgery.  Thanks, Roz, for keeping up with my posts and offering your advice.  I appreciate it and benefit from it so much. Wishing you and yours a wonderful new year.

I definitely  don't mean to lead people  down the wrong path , heaven forbid  Roz.  Gosh , I  never even SAW how  my posts could be misconstrued like that  ...

but of course they CAN be  .

So  I will  say this  .   I think U HAVE to choose - FAT  - or CARBS  .....or limiting UR CALORIES  .....

I personally  choose  CARBS .

that means  I  eat  little fat .... and  watch my  overall caloric intake too .....

I do think that eating unprocessed carbs  is ok ...

and  that a  little  processed carb  without the fat  is OK too  ......  but maybe  I have a higher  need for blood sugar  than most who knows .   I spend enough time writing legal contracts and legal letters on the  gosh  darn  computer to give me carpal tunnel lol !!

In any case  ....  i dont want to be a bad influence on anybody....

All I know is what works for me. If I don't eat refined carbs like sugar and flour I lose the excess weight and I maintain. When I had the DS I lost a lot of weight the first 2 years without really trying, but as soon as that 2 years was up I started gaining because I didn't cut out the sugar and flour stuff. When I cut it out I lost. My biggest problem was that my stomach was left too large and I was hungry all the time and that made me what to eat whatever was there, which was those refined carbs. Which made me want to eat more.
Now with my revision I have a pouch and according to my surgeon very little malabsorption. So all my weight lost is from restriction only. Because my stomach is so small I am not hungry and don't crave things like refined carbs. Also because I take in a lot of protein, about 100 grams a day, I am not hungry and don't crave the refined carbs. I really don't stay away from fruits or vegetables (once I have eaten my protein). I don't avoid fats either. The only foods that I absulutely avoid are white sugar and white flour. I don't eat anything with wheat in it because I don't think gluten and I get along. I will eat potatoes, although I haven't in a while and don't really care if I do. I stay away from rice, too, only because I have heard it doesn't sit well in the pouch. I don't eat things with honey either because to me it is just another form of sugar.
As long as I do that I don't have a problem. It has been that way for as long as I remember, from my first major diet in the 70s when I lost about 100 lbs. I never even heard of low carb then. I just knew that if I ate bread or sugar things I wanted more and couldn't control my eating.

I forgot to look at the date of your revision. I noticed from your photos that you look pretty thin already, so you must be pretty happy with your revision. So with the original DS do they bypass as much as with a RNY? And if so, did they hook it all up again to avoid the malabsorption? Whatever they did it sounds like the best of both worlds.

I know what you mean by the carbs. I don't dump on sugar and at this point nothing really bothers my pouch, so I'm going to do the 5 day pouch test to break the cycle of carb craving.  Thanks for the advice.

They bypass a lot more with a DS then the RNY. I had a 100cc common channel. With the DS I was told it can't be reversed, only revised so they lengthened my common channel to where I don't malabsorb much any more.
I am happy with the revision in the sense that so far I haven't been hungry and I am satisfied eating small portions. Before I was addicted to large quanities as well as refined carbs. The bigger the better. My favorite words were "all you can eat". Now I can be satisfied with a 1/2 cup of chili. I still don't believe it. Every time I measure out my food I find myself thinking "that will never be enough to satisfy me" and it always is.
