Good Morning. Picking the Brazil nuts out of the fancy mixed nuts
For some reason I woke up with the munchies this morning, so after having 2 protein coffees, I decided to dig into the mixed nuts we got for Christmas. Hmmm...I don't like cashews at all or chestnuts (or whatever those little round ones are), or pecans that much nor almonds, but I do like Brazil nuts. So here I sit picking out the Brazil nuts and munching happily away. Okay, what's this got to do with WLS and this crazy ride we're on? An analogy of picking who you're going to listen to for what topic, given all the helpful ideas coming from all us mixed nuts on the boards.
Who do you listen to on the boards for what particular area?
1) Vitalady for vitamins, vitamin labs and long term diet (how can you argue with a successful 16 year veteran with perfect labs?)
2) The lawyers on the DS board for insurance denial issues
3) The doctors on the DS board for medical stuff (we used to have an awesome OBGYN that posted on the LW board all the time but she's off living her life now. {sigh}) and no I'm not saying don't listen to your own docs but if they're idiots find better docs.
4) The nurses, techs, PAs and NPs about medical stuff
5) Fresh post-op newbies about hospital issues, new post-op issues, recent changes about insurance requirements and their surgery experiences out of country
6) Revision folks about possible consequences of bad habits, "too little surgery", and physical / mechanical problems with WLSs
7) I'll take recipes from most everyone but a professional chef is awesome too
8) Anyone who has had a unique experience or whose experience closely resembles my own
9) Everyone's shared victories and challenges and WOWs

I love nuts! almost any kind of nut.
I think OH has some amazing people when it comes to vitamin/labs help. Vitalady, Gina, Andrea, Kelly just to name a few.
I think we also have some amazing posters here on the LW board. They give some pretty sound advice about everyday life & the problems that are throw our way.
Now share some of those nuts Woman!!!! Cindy

Well .... I think we're all good for some info and not so good for OTHER .....
U have to look at the SOURCE .
Like me ..I CLEARLY have an issue with food addiction ... and yet Im very healthy and nearly maintainin g a (very) light goal weight with a very limited surgery .....
So obviously im doing something right .... and then again ..... I WISH my maintenance setpoint would be lower ....
I personally listen to the people I want to BE like ....and look like . Its VERY important to me not to copy people s recipes for instance whose setpoint has landed them a hundred or even fifty or thirty lbs above mine because I dont want to gain weight through rationalizing fattening eating habits .
I dont think the food items in question are worth it .... and someone telling me they're dietetic doesnt make me believe its so .
I really give a LOT Of weight to long - timers who are healthy , vital and thin .... and who care enough about US to share their knowledge . Thanks Gina , Vitalady , and the rest !!!

Mini ME....I agree about some the "dietetic" foods some post on a regular basis. I look at the profiles and find they somtimes do not have the size I am looking to be. I also think that the food choices are not ones I want to emulate if that is the outcome. Everyone is different though and everyone has different goals.
Some people aspire to be smaller than they had been but are OK with staying at higher a BMI because they also want to have an eating pattern similar to the way they used to eat.
My goal is to be on the lower end of a normal BMI...I fully understand that I will never be able to eat anything like I did in the past....because I would never get to where I want to be.

I love nuts of all kinds but my tummy can't handle to many of them at once. Maybe that's how I feel about the LW Board. I love all of the "nuts" on the LW board but sometimes all of the opinions get my head spinning and that's why Gina is my "nut" of choice.
Gina is my go to woman. She might have gotten her info from wonderful people like Vitalady but her willingness to share, answer my questions, her patients, and her dedication to the boards have been an important "tool" in my success.

I love this thread!
This is what I look for on the boards....
from the lightweight board...just a nice bunch of people and a nice place to visit...lots of warm fuzzies and no drama which we all need...Kind of like spending time with a very nice mom, sister or friend
Lately, I have been searching out and reading stories about regain after intial weight loss. I am not quite done with my weight loss but regain scares the crap out of me! I DO NOT want that to happen to me...so I need to learn everything I can from others expereinces to be as sucessful at keeping my weight off long term.
The WOWs and victories are fun.

I love all kinds of nuts, but can't eat too many at one time now.
I like to post my labs here and let Gina look at them and RBB(haven't seen her in a while though). I use Vitalady's lab request and schedules and some of her vitamin schedules.
I also like to read Andrea & Kelly(from the RNY board) regarding vitamins/labs.
I love to look at the Menus and Miles for meal ideas. I love all recipes and check on the recipe board every now and then to see if anything new and appealing has been posted.
I love to look at before/after pictures so I always check those post out to see how different everyone is looking. It is also so encouraging.
I try to read any post that has information regarding people further out from WLS to see how things might change for me so I will be prepared.
There is so much information on this one website that it is hard to take it all in.
Thanks so much to everyone who shares their info.

I always respect the knowledge shared from Andrea and Pam T. - they are so thorough in their research, I know I can trust what they share. I love Niki for her recipes... but I also love World-According-to-Eggface for her inventive spin on food. MajorMom is a reassuring and calming voice of experience....love the posting of the LW creed.
I too will read any success story, any before-and-after, and anything with pictures!

Dibs on the cashews! I dig out the Brazils, macadamia and almonds to re-home. I will eat pecans and hazlenuts
Who do I listen to?
I read a lot. I'm a very avid reader of the more loquacious misinformed people, if I can say that. People who post on every subject but don't have the knowledge behind it, which misleads newbies. Then I spend the rest of the day trying to figure out how to correct the information without correcting the person.
I read the people who quote studies, textbook info and stuff that applies to everyone but US. Again, spend the rest of the day running it thru my WLS filter to adjust the info so it's useful without correcting the poster. Sometimes I can't, so there it stays, even if it is dead wrong.
I always read Kirmy because she makes me ROOMC. roll out of my chair.
I don't care about recipes. At this moment, I don't want to eat anything, anyway.
I would be watching the insurance stuff more but if it's in another state, it doesn't apply to me.
Medical ppl. Often to get the textbook view and then figure out where it deviates from real life.
Why revisions are needed. Complications.
Now if you read back thru that, you can tell I watch shows like: NCIS; the LA version; CSI's; Bones..... I must have the WHY. HOW. WHO. WHEN.

P.S. My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.
There's the Vitalady herself! Hi, Michelle- I have heard so much about you! You are on my list of people to talk to as part of my New Year's resolutions! I had my surgery on May 24 and I fear I have not been making the most of this 'tool' nor taking care of myself as well as I should be. Can you please do me a favor and read my New Topic post that I wrote about an hour ago? I could use some knowledgeable advice on this subject.
Thank you and I'll be in touch soon!
