Good Morning. Tips, tricks and BIG mistakes...
Awesome post Gina...
1 - my biggest mistake is eating too much and/or too fast. Underestimating the power of the pouch is a BIG mistake!!! lol My lesson learned is to always chew chew my food real well and listen to the pouch she knows what she's doing.
2 - My super duper tip is to have fun with the food. It is not the enemy and wls is not a life condemned sentence...although there were times I sure felt like it...but I try to have fun with my food ESPECIALLY with my protein shakes!! They are never boring and never icky...very important stuff...
The other thing is to keep moving.

My first big mistake was with my first WLS and that was thinking I could eat refined carbs in moderation. After regaining 100 lbs I learned that didn't work for me.
I bought a blender bottle and a small blender and since then my shakes have been much more tolerable, if not good. I just buy the cheap protein powder, Body Fortress at Wal Mart, and mix up sugar free syrups, pudding mix and peanut flour and I have tons of different varities to try. I like my shakes hot and cold. I use the clear types like Nectar with sugar free drink tubes, can't drink them alone. I am losing weight better this time then I did the first time and I think it's because I get in a lot of water and a lot of protein and I don't tempt myself with any trigger foods.

Well , an orange with the skin on and all the fibrous parts two weeks post op did get stuck lol . That ALMOST led to disastrous consequences - thank God lots of water washed it out .
Im going to say what doesnt work for me - babying my pouch - I eat what I want .. and I eat a lot . I LIKE eating and I like not being constipated . That said I DONT eat sugar or fat ... or huge amounts of anything so I dont GET fat .
I stop eating when i am no longer hungry .
I try to eat raw vegetables , raw fruits , and slightly cooked fruits and veggies FIRST ( after lean proteins and fat free dairy of course and after water ) . Then i eat plain whole grains . I take a lot of vitamins but i dont kid myself that they are enough for health or feeding my SOUL - I also eat a lot of yummy FOOD .
Frankly I still love to grow cook and EAT gourmet super healthy organic fresh food ....and i have the boundless energy and glowing skin and healthy hair , straight tall posture etc to prove it ....
My biggest learning curve experience was protein shakes - I didnt think I needed them - as a semi vegetarian I subscribed to the theory that 40 grams or so of veggie (and in my case dairy egg and limited meat and fish ) protein was PLENTY ... but six months or so post RNY I got HUNGRY , my nails and hair were BRITTLE and breaking and well I just was HUNGRY .....
so I tried protein chai tea a la GIna . And that one protein shake every morning ( and occasionally one in cofffee in the afternoon ) has made a WORLD of difference in my being able to keep the weight off 18 months post op !
Who knew ?
Im a living example that you CAN eat FOOD and not just shakes n snacks and keep the weight stable and at goal weight ... BUT I am still early out .... I started VERY light .... I am a lifelong exerciser/ athlete and I eat a very fatfree and high fiber plant based very largely unprocessed diet . Still its an interesting alternative .
So far Im very healthy , young looking and anything but frail , thank God .

Since we all have many different WLS my mistakes may not fit the mold of others but on my list of tips is keep trying till you find a protein drink you like. Tricks would be I found a funnel that attaches to drink bottles to put in the protein powder. And put a lil water in the bottle first so it won't stick to the bottom. Mistake was to try to use a drink bottle I had used for protein the day before without rinsing it right after the first use. .....just smell it first and you know why! BIG mistake I made was to think I could eat a big burger with bun and trimmings...just last week !
