Im having my revision in a few days and have been taking biotin for the past few months.  I didnt lose any hair with my band, but I wanted to be proactive before my RNY.  My ? is...can you open biotin capsules and put them in something like, a protein shake, or water?  I have the big capsules that are ok now, but I'm sure will be too big after surgery.  For those that take biotin, how do you manage and can you actually see the benefits? Thanks!!

That's a great question and I think it also goes for calcium and vitamin D, etc. Any of the B vitamins won't tast good that way but many other will be fine as you're describing. I don't know exactly what biotin would taste like in a liquid but it's worth a try. As you progress you could also add it to soups, yogurt and pudding. Calcium tablets will actually melt in a little water, so you could melt a horse pill and add it to your protein shake or Crystal Lite. The grit you might see in the botom is mostly the filler from the tablet not the calcium.

I take biotin from Swanson Vits and it is tiny caps.  They go down quite easily and have from the beginning.  I am just starting the hair loss phase and am losing a little but not handfuls, yet anyway.  We'll see if it actually helps as time goes on.

I starting taking Biotin this week.  It seems to make me nauseous.  Have you had any issues with it?

Fortunately, I haven't had any issues taking the biotin.  I take 5000mcg/ a day (in one capsule). I havent really seen any benefits either and I've been taking them for about 2 months.

I have been taking biotin preop and then  little break postop, and now take everyday. I have lost quite a bit of hair but can see the regrowth coming in. I dont see a problem with opening the capsule, just dont know what it would taste like.
Good luck.

I started taking the big, giant Biotin caps about 5 years pre-op for different reasons, and have just kept taking them.

Vitalady noted at some point that when she has to take a capsule, she just holds it in her mouth for a bit until the gelatin starts to melt, and then swallows before she gets to the powder. I've been taking any capsules that way for the past year, and it does make them easier to swallow without having to actually taste them (although there was the time yesterday when the antibiotic melted too much... uggggghhhhhh!!!!!)

Not sure if you worked out mixing your Biotin....but I have a couple of tips & suggestions!!

When you mix Biotin with a "liquid", it doesn't mix well.  It doesn't dissolve.  Better to put it in something (pudding, applesauce, yogurt, smoothie, etc).  My son takes them everyday (2 of what you are taking, 10mg).  I've tried lots of ways to mix it.  What we did for many years is smoothies.  I bought the Danimals smoothie (they are small).  I cracked open the capsules, pour about 1/2 the smoothie in the cup, mixed it with a straw and then he drank it through the straw!  Worked perfect!!!!!  Few times we had to mix it with milk.....he didn't like that!!  When he was a baby I mixed it in about 2 tbsp of applesauce!!  We started in the formula (had to), went to baby food, then to applesauce, next was the smoothie and this summer he graduated to swallowing them whole!!  One at a time of course.

Good luck, hope this helps!

There are never any problems, only solutions.  quoted by a dear and special friend!!!
