Tested my limits and now I know what dumping is first hand
I really went into this hoping I would dump post-op. I DREAD feeling nauseated and the threat of dumping will be a huge motivator for me to eat in moderation and not go overboard. I was concerned that I would not be in the 30% or so that do dump.
Of course, I am the type of person that has to actually test the waters before I believe something one way or the other..NOT GOOD. But that is just me...oh well.
So now I know LOL.... I have stayed on program for months...way before surgery even. But yesterday I got up close and personal with a 1/3rd of a piece of turtle cheesecake from cheesecake factory. 10 minutes later I had textbook symptoms...heart was about to beat out of my chest, cold sweats, nausea, light headed. Soooo not fun. Horrible, actually.
Thankfully it only lasted 30 minutes. And now I learned the hard way....stay on program until goal (no if ands or buts) and I have a new definition of "moderation" for when I am in maintenance :)
Resolution for the New Year...try to figure out a way to learn the easy way....UGH

Oh I am a boundary tester too...sorry to hear you dumped but if it were me...I'd be relieved to know I do.
Me personally, high fat content gives me a different set of symptoms than high sugar content. I get a crazy headache if I am pushing too close to the limit. Like I took a bite of flan and it was too sweet. About 15 minutes later, I had a bad headache. Another time I ordered a skinny latte from Starbucks' (non-fat milk and SF syrup) and they gave me full on sugar syrups. I drank my drink being none the wiser and within 30 min...I was curled up in a fetal position on the bed with DH rubbing my back to help with the cramps.
I now am seriously more paranoid of dumping and try very hard to not test my boundaries. Dumping SUCKS big time....
I am so sorry you went through it but am glad you know you do...make sense? LOL

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. Now I'm sure you'll be much wiser! I'm having my RNY in 4 days and I am PRAYING that I do fall in that 30% because I am a sweet finatic! (I just had a banana split and I'm suppose to be on a 2 week all liquid diet!) Dumping is one thing that I think I'll need to help me limit myself...
Char and diana- You guys are SO LUCKY that you dump. I had not tested my tummy enough to know for sure until this past week. I really regressed back to old habits this week and before I knew it I was eating not one, but two pieces of Starbuck's seasonal favorite Gingerbread loaf with cream cheese frosting --- and nothing happened! I WISH I dumped. I was counting on it as a deterant to eating the foods that got me into trouble in the first place. Now I'm not sure what I'm gonna do. Join Over Eaters Anonymous? I just don't know.
I don't think I dump on sugar or fat. I haven't pushed the limits real hard but enough to think that I'm not one of the lucky 30%. A "friend" gave me a box of chocolates for Christmas and I have had 2 with no problems.
Glad you found out, no good that the only way to find out is to get sick.

I had one full-dumping episode and it was early out - I mixed some pain meds with liquid vitamins and they didn't play well together. Classic symptoms and slept for 2 hours.
Like Linda, I have had so many mini-dumps I can't count them. Mini dumps are when you get the flush feeling, kinda lightheaded, feel kinda yucky but it passes fairly quickly.
Now - I have tested the waters beyond belief this holiday season - and with barely an ill effect - which I'm very bummed about. Last year if I'd have eaten the sweets I did this year, I'd been in a fetal position for the entire month. I'm not happy either that I have more of a sugar tolerance either... I really DID want to dump to remind myself... up until now I still had myself convinced I DO dump... now I know I can tolerate sugars.
I've had a few sleepy moments after eating them this year, but not the flush, icky feeling...
Now you know what a full dump feels like and yes, it IS a deterrent. If you're like me, you'll do everything possible NOT to go through that again.
Like Diana - fats also made me dump big time (earlier out). I don't eat a lot of fat now, but can tolerate more than before.
