4 days post VSG, gas question

Hi everyone!

I have a question for you VSGers (or other surgeries, if you experienced something similar!) I'm doing pretty well, passing gas, able to get my liquids in (I am on clears for 6 more days), feeling relatively little pain. However, my intestines are SUPER NOISY, like a really loud tummy growl, but it's my intestines, NOT my stomach. I know it's gas rumbling around, because I usually pass gas after a particularly loud rumble, but it's disconcerting and sometimes uncomfortable. Has this happened to anyone else? When did this calm down for you? Is this because I am on clears? Residual from surgery?

Thanks for any insights! :)

(I'm so jealous of those of you who get to eat dinner with family. I'm feeling rather sorry for myself today that I can't enjoy anything tasty at the holiday and am staying home alone. I know, I made this choice and I am glad i did, but the hormones and the whole ordeal is making me super emotional.)

I had RNY but my intestines did the same thing.  It's from surgery and stuff starting to move through them again.  I don't get it much any more if ever.  The best part about the weeks after surgery is that nothing stays the same.  You will have many new sensations, some pleasant, like not being hungry, and some not so much.  Even if you could eat, nothing taste very good right after surgery.  But that changes also.  You will be very ready for the next phase of eating, I always was.  But looking back, it was such a small time in the grand scheme of things.
Congrats and glad you are doing well.

Price, thank you SO much for your reply! I'm glad this is normal and something I shouldn't be concerned about. :)

I don't have the taste issues. Everything I liked before I like now, and I would cut someone to have some cheese. :( My head hunger is pretty bad and I'm feeling pretty sorry for myself. I just have to talk myself through it and concentrate on getting my protein and fluids in. I know I will look back and feel the same as you when I am past it, but boy, getting past it sucks.

Thanks for your support. :)

Abby, glad you are doing ok.

I had RNY and mine still get pretty noisy sometimes.  It probably is gas.  One night DH said what is that noise???  I told him it was my insides and I didn't know what was going on it was soooo loud!!  I'm on regular food so I don't know if it is because you are on clears or not.

Mine make noise ALL the time!  Real rumbly, especially if I'm consitpated or gassy... and even when I'm not. I'm RNY and 2 years out so not sure how that relates to VSG'ers...

I hope you have a Merry Christmas - you've made the best decision ever and the sacrifice of this one holiday will definitely make up for the improved life you'll have in the future.

Thanks, Jody! I know I won't regret it, I'm just having post-op blues. :) Thanks for chiming in! I appreciate so much knowing I'm not the only one.

Merry Christmas to you, too!

Abby - what you have going on is normal. The grumbling will last a few weeks, or at least mine did. I went to Dr. Aceves too...I had surgery October 22nd. It's been WONDERFUL...

Robin: thanks so much for your input! :) I do have a question. Who do you email if you have a question about post-op care, food, etc.? I've heard people get follow-up emails from someone named Gaby, but I've never met her or gotten anything from her. I only have Nina's email/contact info. Do you just go through your coordinator and they ask the doctors?

 Abby,

I'm sending you a great big hug right now! Being alone for the holidays is the pits!

Please call lots of friends and family and at least talk with them if you can't see them. This early out from surgery, you need all the support you can get.

I didn't have VSG, I had RNY. However, my stomach makes noises all the time. My hubby and I laugh about it all the time.

Just remember these feelings are fleeting. Next Christmas you will be able to have some turkey or ham. Your hormones will be back on track by then. I was a complete basket case 5 days post-op. I was in pain and miserable. I was tired of broth and just wanted to chew something. I chewed on ice. It helped a lot.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery! You will do great.

Hugs,
