Had an emergency with our horse early this morning. he has developed colic which is a very bad stomache in horses. They can't burp or throw up and I'm not sure about gas but it can be life threatening if not resolved.

The vet was here and gave him two shots and a sort of a GI cocltail thingy consisting of a five gallon bucket of water, about a quart of mineral oil and something that looked like maalox. He used a tube that looked like a clear gharden hose  put down his nose and put the ****tail in that way.

He is some better this evening but not out of the woods yet. Vet said it might take him longer for him to recover since hi is so old. olease pray/swing chickens for him.

I I had my yearly eye exam this morning and after dealing with Dairy and the vet barely had time to rush out the door I leftn without snack or drinks. Ended up going out to lunch with DH's office for their holiday lunch and I had a small bag of almonds in my purse for just such an emergency so was good with that till lunch but I only got 16 oz of fluid in. Also,no vits. drinking now but I know I wont catch up on either one. Oh well, one good reason i am able to get everything in most every other day.

B teras whey choc protein shake with 1/2 coconut milk and 1/2  soy milk

L a part of a flat bread with goat cheese and prime rib on it several bites of a peppermint choc sundae

D homemade chili and 1/2 beef weiner
S protein hot drink as above
S cottage cheese and fresh blueberries

Cals 1089

Hope your horse is ok. Colic is really scarey and with the cold, I'm always afraid they aren't drinking enough.  I have one horse, my sister's old foxhunter, my 2 ponies and 4 donkeys here so I am always on the lookout for problems.

Thanks,Price. he didn't make it. He died sometime in the early hours of the morning today. The vet said his age,30 years, was against him, plus the weather,15 degrees one day and 50 degrees the next. He didn't have a twist as far up as the vet could feel, but it was possible. We tried to make sure there was water available to him,and he did drink, but maybe not enough. The vet did tell us to give him warm water and he might drink more,so we will keep that in mind  for future horses we might have.

He has been with us exactly two months today. We loved him dearly and I believe he loved us. He loved to have kisses on his nose. His life this last two months was as good as we could make it. He had appropriate food and had gained 160 # since he was underweight when we got him. He had no stress and nothing to do but give a few rides to our grandboys every now and then and the rest of the time he did what he liked. He had a warm blanket and a secure stall for night time.

We will miss him.
