I'm so sorry you're feeling this way.  I take lexapro and it helps me.  Our fat cells are packed with estrogen so as they deflate they release all these hormones into our blood. When my NUT explained this to me it made it a little easier to deal with.  I hope you find something that works for you.

Wellbuterin is working well for me and there's no weight gain. In fact, weight loss is a side effect. It can be taken alone or with another antidepressant.

Sorry you are feeling so low. Irritability is a sign of depression. Many of the antidepressants do cause weight gain due to increased appetite. Stay away from paxil and remeron. They are known to cause weight gain. Prozac/zoloft/Celexa/lexapro can also result in weight gain, but to a lesser extent. Wellbutrin or bupropion is the most weight neutral antidepressant, but if you find yourself more irritable and agitated after taking this medication, it may not be for you.

Good Luck!!!

 Ann Marie,

I've been having the same problem, my mood swings are a nightmare.   In hindsight I've had low grade depression most of my life with periods of major depressions that would last for months.  In the past I've tried Prozac but that caused me to gain a ton of weight and just made me more depressed.

For the past couple of years I've been irritable and having more bad days than good days but since my surgery in February it's gotten a LOT worse.  It was starting to affect my job so I went on Wellbutrin as I'd used it in the past to quit smoking and liked the way it helped with my mood.  I recently increased the dose and I still don't feel all that great but my Dr did put me on Clonazapam for my anxiety issues which is helping to keep my anger/rage in check.  I'm hoping that when the Wellbutrin kicks in and get's my depression lifted I won't need the tranquilizers on a daily basis.

Sorry, Ann Marie - this sounds like a ton.  I agree with Seaview's advice - treat this as seriously as you do any illness.  Your body deserves attention, and so does your mind.

Blessings to you as you work to figure this out.
