home from hosp -- complication xpost
Oh sweet Amy, I've been looking for updates from Megan but didn't see them. I know she was busy helping with the little ones. I'm so glad they let you go home where you will probably be able to rest a little better. Congratulations on being half way to goal, but definitely not how you wanted to do it! Those clothes that didn't fit you three weeks ago are going to fit you now!
I'm just the other side of the tunnel from you. I'm not leaving town until Christmas morning so please let me know if I can help you in any way.
Many hugs coming your way and a Merry Christmas to you and your family. Please tell Megan that I say Ho Ho Ho and Hello. :)

Hi Amy,
Glad to hear that things are going better for you and that you will home for Christmas.
I had my own set of complications, which started just before week 4 and spent 2 weeks in the hospital. I was at Kaiser Walnut Creek for about 5 days and about 9 days at Kaiser Fremont. NOT FUN AT ALL. On the positive side, at least with Kaiser everything is on the electronic medical record, which makes communication much easier between facilities and physicians.
When one is in crisis, it is difficult to drive an hour to a facility that is more prepared to treat WLS pts. At least the docs could communicate with each other.
As far as the low hemoglobin, mine was also low. In the hospital, it was about 9.6 and only went up to 10.2, and I usually run around 14. After I was discharged, I met with my PCP, who ran some iron tests and I was found to be very deficient in iron. My iron level was 10.2 and he ordered 4 weeks of iron infusions. My levels rose modestly, and I am now receiving 4 weeks of Procrit injections as a means to stimulate my bone marrow to produce more RBCs. It is working. Last week, my hemoglobin was 12.6 and my ferritin was beginning to drop to lower levels (it was sky high).
The gist of this is, have your PCP run some iron tests to see, if you are iron deficient. Also, this problem is common in partial gastrectomy patients and can occur this early out.
Take Care,
Gail

Did you have reflux before the surgery?? I sure hope they get it resolved so you don't have to have another surgery.
I had some of the magic mouthwash when I had a really sore throat right before surgery - that stuff is amazing!!
Take care of yourself.
