I'm in hospital -- complication xpost
Hi everyone --- only have my husbands lap top for about 10 minutes! I came into the hospital sunday 12/5 with a 104 fever. They did a ct scan which slowed a contusion/laceration to my spleen and they put me on a bunchof iv antibiotics, now my fever is gone but the chills and sweats remain. I started having much worse reflux and now seem to me vomiting acid throughout the day. I am on nexium twice daily, carafate 4 times a day, tums and mylanta as well as dilaudid for the pain and zofran for the vomiting. I haven't been able to keep down 1 drop of liquid or protein in 8 days . supposed to have upper gi today and have already had a cpl chest xays. and 2 chest /abdomen ct's since I have been in here, also on iv fluids to get my b/p up. i cant believe this pain and nausea and acid... Anyway, I may not be on for awhile but i will ask my dtr to post an update after the upper gi, they really want to do an endoscopy but I am a big ol chicken, I said upper gi first. Sorry to anyone who emailed who I couldnt respond to personally. Hope everyone is dong ok. cant speak to wt loss since I havent seen my wt since sat the 4th. Gotta imagine it is down quite a bit though. hell of a way to do it :-( BTW -- unclear if spleen injury was from surgery or if it was from a contusion post op. Doctors dont agree --- but since they dont know WHY I have these symptoms it if awful trying to FIX them. I am in a big kaiser medical center in Walnut Creek which is not a bariatric center and that has been challenging. Hugs (gently) Amy
Prayers and swinging critters those docs will be in constant touch with bariatric surgeons and that you'll be doing much much better soon. Keep us posted as you can.

I'm so sorry to hear about your complications and will be including you in my special prayers until you are home and doing well again, sweetie. Take care, rest, and think good thoughts ...and know that lots of hugs are coming your way. And please ....you are asleep for the endoscopy .... you have no clue that they are doing anything and no worries afterwards ...think about it, please? I've had at least 6 over the last 10 years and never had any idea I'd had anything done, going on, or any clue it happened. Just went to sleep, woke up and it was over! Good diagnostic tools, dear.
HUGS!!

Hi Amy,
I also had complications and spent 2 weeks in the hospital. I was at Walnut Creek for about 5 days, and then they transferred me down to Fremont. So, don't be surprised, if you end up at Fremont. I couldn't keep very much down for the two weeks and lost about a lb/day, for a total loss of 15 lbs for the 2 weeks. Tough way to do it. Trying to eat at Walnut Creek was a real challenge, because they aren't used to treating bariatric patients. Try clear or full liquids, when you are able.
I had developed a cardiac arrhythmia related to the stress of the surgery and had 1.5 liters of fluid drained off my left lung. When they did the CAT scan of my abdomen, they found a collection of fluid, which was unabsorbed blood from the surgery. I was sent to Fremont for treatment of the abcess. They put in a drain and I had to wear that for two weeks, after I was discharged from the hospital. I also ran a very high temp (103) on and off during the two weeks and was on IV antibiotics for that time.
The acid relux, nausea ,and vomiting are related to the sleeve and are quite common, although, the severity certainly varies. Sounds like you have it bad.
I think that I received very good care, both at Walnut Creek and Fremont. Everyone was very nice to me and the medical workup was very thorough. The physicians at Walnut Creek always consulted with the bariatric surgeons at Fremont.
Do the endoscopy. It will give the doctors more information and they will be better able to treat you.
HUGS and swinging lizards for you.

Oh Amy!! I'm so sorry this happened to you. I've been away from the board for 5 days and didn't realize you weren't around. Please do have Megan keep us updated on how you're doing. As Gail said, she was well taken care of at Walnut Creek. Please let me know if there's anything that I can do for you. I hope you get to go home soon.
