but I really don't know. Are protein shakes made only with water after surgery?

Nope!
I know postop when I could have only 2 oz at a time, I had some recipes with high protein shakes that included protein powder with a slimfast locarb shake. Or one that was made with some peaches and greek yogurt and protein powder.
I like to use lactose free skim milk too to boost the protein count. I cant handle regular milk postop.
Bariactic foodie and the world according to eggface have some good protein shake recipes.
Good luck!

Debbie,

First of all no question is a silly question......if you knew the answer you wouldn't be asking it!  I think most people experiment and find out what they like and what they are able to tolerate.  If you like it and your insides do too then go for it!

It just depends on how you like them. If I'm mixing it into coffee, I always just use water. Some flavors, like lemonade and lemon tea, I definitely use water. If I'm going to mix it up just to drink it and it's chocolate or vanilla I might use skim milk. No questions are silly!

I use water, milk, soy milk and almond milk, depending on what I feel like.
For the fruit type drinks I usually mix it with sugar free drink mix. I can't drink them with jus****er.

Thank you all so much. My pre-op diet says I can make them with Hood Simply Smart because it has 2 grams more of protein than skim, but I wasn't sure if it would be the same post-op. I don't know why I thought I couldn't have milk afterwards. lol

So much to learn.

I was told from my nutritionist, pre-op, that I was never allowed to have milk again. Talk about confused when I got the approved list of items and milk was on it.
I had to make several phone calls to get that issue straight.
I can definately see your confusion.

Debbie, some people become lactose-intolerant after surgery. So try the milk, and if it gives you problems, you can either switch to water-based or get lactose-free milk (I know Lactaid brand is widely available).

I was using almond milk pre-op but switched to 1% milk due to the higher protein. I am very glad to not have problems with milk. Once I can get in more of my protein from food, I will probably switch back to almond milk just because the calories are so much lower.
