Ive always thought more and more protein has its drawbacks ..... stress on the kidneys , links to osteoporosis , a prematurely " frail " and aged look .....
ive never liked the Atkins diet for that reason..... just look at Dr. Atkins... do you want to look like him ? Especially not that he died prematurely ..... lol..... NOT , they trumpet , from eating his diet of course ....
LOL ... I say .... who is foolish enough to believe THAT ?! his diet had nothing to do with his death ?! !!
Now Ive always done my own thing all my life ( and it didnt get me far) ..but thats my personality .. and ive continued to do it here at OH .
I believe in a fat free moderate protein moderate complex carbohydrate containing diet largely in the form of veggies - fresh or Slightly sauteed or cooked . Which also means a very high- fiber diet BTW .
I lost weight FAST but have had a hell of a time getting it ALL off .. then again my goal weight is 115 lbs and for a 5'9" person thats very low . I have NO PROBLEM maintaining a strong , defined TOUGH and athletic looking body though ......
This is how i know im doing SOMETHING right -
1) i have never had gastrointestinal issues including ulcers pain etc or constipation EVER
2) i dont crave snack foods or fast food or anything naughty
3) I heal FAST
4) my hair is thick my eyes bright my skin snapped back tight and my muscles look both defined and in their proper places - ie i dont have that " melted candle look " at all....
For what its worth ... I think SOME carbs CAN be eaten and tolerated post WLS .
I think the no-carb thing may be just a PREFERENCE many overweight people have who want o be able to continue to eat FAT which is what theyre really addicted to ....
Now U may well ask ..is my POUCH larger ..... and i will say yes ... but its not really a problem unless I start to eat the wrong things .
In a sense I am much more like a normal person- I eat a larger portion of low calorie stuff and eat it fairly OFTEN too ( i like salads between meals for instance - or veggie snax like the bowlful of steamed Chinese broad beans .Im eating right now .......mmmmm)
I actually ate this way before WLS too... only i couldn't STOP eating . Now , I can stop when i want . I can maintain my weight WITHOUT running every day though i LIKE to exercise for its many benefits .....mental and physical .
What WLS did for me is I dont eat so much I have to exercise it OFF . Thats huge .
I just wanted to put it out here .. that there is a viable alternative to protein more protein and cutting back on carbs .
I LOVE my veggies and fruits and even occasionally whole grains ....
what do U guys think ? what works for YOU ? lets share tricks and tips on attaining /maintaining our goal weight !

For me carbs have always been a slippery slope...I am eight months out and I am just starting to put a bit of fruit in my shakes...ie..half a banana...or a handful of berries...I eat no bread...not pasta...no
potatoes..sweet or otherwise...I have been doing so well without the carbs for the first time in my life I think I could survive without them...of course vegetables and fruit...but nothing else..I do fine with shakes...dairy protein of all sorts...and nuts ( my little weakness) but even they are very low in carbs..
So for me carbs are dangerous and the sugar addiction so strong that I really fear going back in that direction....but I have lost weight before eating the ZONE diet which lets you have more carbs..but the carb addiction just snuck back up on me...that's my two cents...SEAVIEW

I don't have a problem with carbs, I have a problem with simple, refined carbs, mainly bread, pasta and sugar. History has shown me time and again that as long as those things stay out of my diet I do fine. Once I start eating those things it sets off a craving that won't stop until I endulge. I also stay away from whole grain bread and pasta because in the past I start with those and end up with the refined kind. I have also been trying to stay away from wheat products which is hard because wheat is in a lot of things. I do eat rye crackers and things like oatmeal. Actually I haven't had oatmeal for a while but I have a big container of it so I am sure I will be having some soon. I don't eat a lot of fruit lately but that is just because I eat protein first, then vegies and that usually fills me up before I get to the fruit. I don't even buy it because I usually wind up throwing it out. I do like high protein because it seems to help with the hunger and my weight loss is doing great so if it's not broke why fix it.
I don't avoid fat either. I don't eat fried things but I like cheese and milk and I would rather have 2% then fat free. My theory is if I can tolerate something in the low fat form I'll use it, like mayo but if it doesn't taste good I will go for the regular version.

In the beginning I did almost all protein. I stayed under 30 total carbs a day. Then when I started working out harder and running a lot, I added the healthy carbs back in, like fruits, veggies, and whole grains. I actually flew through the rest of the pounds I wanted to lose. Also, all of the sudden my restriction was not near as much as it was in the beginning, and eating fresh veggies allows me to eat more and feel full without adding calories or fat. Plus, I get all of the vitamins these foods offer. I also do not have to take fiber supplements.
I'm still pretty early out so my response won't be for the long term. I still try to get my protein in first, then add veggies. I am trying to have some fruit or veggies with almost every meal. Yesterday included 1/2 apple, broccali, beans. I would love to eat more veggies but at this point don't have the room. I still take a fiber suppliment because there is no way to get enough fiber. I'm not afraid of complex carbs at all. Just don't have much room for them.
Fat, hum. I have next to no added fat. Maybe light salad dressing occasionally. Looking at the fat colunm on my tracker, I am still getting fat from meat and cheese and sometimes it amazes me how much. It is usually around 25% of my intake. And I don't have full fat anything (yogurt, cheese, etc.) I know the body needs some fat and I have been losing so I'm ok with it.
