Mourning my hair...
I knew when I walked into the hair salon on Friday that I was in trouble. I walked in wearing a hat because I knew that my hair was more messed up than it's ever been. In the last few weeks I've lost my curl, my hair looked like straw and there didn't appear to be a touch of moisture left in the strands, plus so much of it was gone. *sigh*
I pulled off my hat and asked my hairdresser to please help me and my sad head of hair. In the past she's always commented that she wasn't seeing the loss that I was talking about. This time she took one look at me and said.. we have to fix this. We think that adding the thyroid meds to the already shedding head was like a script for doom. My curl was indeed gone and their was a huge amount of hair loss. Ok, I knew from reading OH that this was to be expected.
I told her to do whatever she needed. So off came my hair. I told her I'd rather be a 10 with a hat than a 24 with gorgeous hair. Off it came. I haven't had it this short in many years. Just think Pixie. Many people regularly wear their hair this short and it's adorable. And I'm sure mine isn't as bad as I think.
But it's a process folks. Something to get used to. I thought I was geared up for the possibility but until it actually happens, it's not reality. I was hoping that it wouldn't come to this, but it did. So I'm trying to embrace the new me. Can I just say, my neck is cold!!! It's good that I have beautiful scarves to wrap around my neck. The bright side is that it will probably grow in much healthier. The last time I lost my hair a decade ago, it took a couple of years before the curl came back. Maybe this time will be faster. I'm still more grateful than not, just kind of mourning what I see in the mirror.

Lee! You'll be fine!!!
I'm in the same boat. Remember I have a landing strip in the middle and long about 3" everywhere else due to my surgery. I am about ready to cut it all to match, about 1/2' all around.
Think of it this way...how healthy it will grow back and to start all over. To wear our hair that short, it shows confidence and that we're sexy women who flaunt the fact that we look darn good! We don't need to hide behind our hair.
Plus I'm on thyroid meds and having an overactive or underactive thyroid is a hair recepie for disaster. I am Hypo and my hair falls out and gets dry if my thyroid is not under control.
Only a confident woman can display the canvas so well!

Melissa, I was thinking about you when I wrote my post. Thinking about your landing strip and how I had nothing to complain about! :)
Ok, I'll go for the confidence routine. I wish I felt sexy with hair this short but at 60 it just makes me feel a little on the "old" side.
Good to know that you get dry hair as well when your thyroid is not under control. I've been wanting to sleep a lot more than usual which tells me that maybe the meds aren't the right dosage for me.

Aw, Lee, I'm sorry! You DO have beautiful hair. I'm sure it will be back soon.
I haven't seen it, but the plus sides of the pixie (at least in theory):
- when your hair starts really growing back, you won't wind up with lots of uneven short strands next to much longer strands - you can grow it in evenly, in other words
- pixie cuts are adorable!
- now that you can see definition in your face so much more than would be true at a 24, your face structure can probably pull it off nicely.
But it is a loss, I get that. I cut my hair really short once in a fit of frustration (again, I'll leave that link live just for a few hours for privacy's sake) and often found myself missing my longer locks. On the other hand, it was very liberating, and cut my time to get ready each morning by about 75%.
You'll get used to seeing yourself this way.
It'll encourage you to try some entirely different looks, too. I found that I had to femme it up so that I wouldn't look butch all the time (like in the photo). When I bothered (which was rare) it was helpful to wear some fun makeup, more than I usually would at that time.
Anyway, Lee, I feel your pain! This shall pass, my love. Until then...

Hugs back atcha cutie. Do you straighten your hair now? You look pretty cute with it short and I can see that you get your gorgeous bone structure from your grandfather.
The last time I had hair this short was from chemo type meds back in 2001. My passport picture looks awful. My hair was about 1/2 inch all over my head at the time and I looked sick. At least I don't need a new passport pic for a couple of years. :)
More makeup. Now there's something to consider. I'm a usual eyeliner, mascara, blush, lipstick, hit the road. Maybe I'll buy some new shadows.
I know I'll love the morning wash and run routine but it takes a little getting used to.
Thanks for the great reminders!

Thanks Toni! I was thinking of earrings as well. I'm stuck in a rut of just wearing my small diamond hoops and studs, but I do have lots of bigger earrings from years gone by. I was thinking of pulling them out. Maybe some bigger necklaces too.
Most of my highlights got cut off. I'm debating whether I want to put more chemicals in my hair for the next few weeks/months etc. I probably will. :)

I would love to see pics of the new do! Hang in there, once you are done losing weight, your hair loss should stop. I have seriously considered chopping mine as well. It is so horrible and thin, and the curl is basically gone. I have 1-2 inch sprouts of new hair all over my entire head and they stick out through the thin hair that hung on. It looks pretty horrible. But like you said, totally worth it. In a few years we won't even remember that we went through such nonsense.
I try to remind myself that my hair loss was for a very good reason, and there are cancer patients out there that are completely bald, fighting for their lives, so I should shut up and deal with it! (I do o****il I want to fix myself up for something).
