Yuck Yuck Yuck. Protein powder help!!

Since  I didnt have to do a pre-op diet, I thought I would make my own to follow. I have never used a protein powder before, so this morning was my first attempt at it!

I got "Micro Whey" isolate protein- with no flavor. I thought I would get the one that didnt have flavor so I could add it to soup, since Ill be on a liquid diet for a month after surgery.

I dont like milk...and am pretty sure I am lactosintolerant- so I cant make those skim milk protein shakes. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get my protein in for the day, keep my calories down to a minimum, and get my water in during the day?

Are there anyways to make these shakes with fresh fruit and ice with the protein powder...or should i just invest in a flavored protein powder as well?

I have my surgery this friday morning, so any help I could get on this subject will really help :-)

Thanks everyone!

I was going to suggest adding unflavored to pudding and yogurt but if you're lactose intolerant that might be a problem. Soups are fine, just make sure they're a little cooled down first. You can make a slurry of protein powder and cool water, and add hot soup to avoid clumps too.

I'm not sure what types and flavors are available over there. It's usually a good idea to try samples first before you buy a big tub of the stuff. I get a lot of variety using a vanilla-cinnamon protein powder as I can add coffee or chai tea to the slurry and add sugar free syrups or spices if I want. I also like chocolate and use chocolate powder plus SF syrups or other fruity protein powders like strawberry.

Good luck!

I'm not familiar with the protein you mentioned but some of the unflavored, truely does have a taste.
Unfortunately, for many of us, the things that were ok, after surgery were awful. When I started with protein, I got a tub of vanilla from Walmart. I added it to my coffee, to crystal light, esp. Orange and raspberry. Added SF chocolate if I wanted chocolate. It was fine but tasted pretty nasty after surgery. I ordered samples of Unjury and Nectars and just kept trying different things until l found a couple I could stand. Now after almost 3 months, I can do just about any chocolate, vanilla, etc. I really enjoy the Nectar Latte in my morning decaf and the Nectar Lemon tea in the afternoon. The trick is to keep trying stuff until you find some you are ok with. Also, I don't mix any with milk unless I am trying to up the protein for the day and mix the chocolate with it.
If you look back a little on the messages, Jody posted a list of recipies for drinks, lots and lots.

Everybody has a different view on protein drinks.  You basically have to keep trying them until you find the one you like.

Personally, I like the Syntrax Nectars.  They come in a variety of dessert and fruit flavors.  You can get samples from Vitalady.com. You mix them with water.  I start my day with the Lemon Iced Tea.

I can't stand the flavored powders mixed with water only......I can stomach them with milk and fresh fruit......can you try a lactose free milk?  I wasn't able to drink the "milk shakes" right after surgery because i would get too full but I did drink the Ice tea flavor Nectar mixed with lemonade crystal light with my water ALL DAY long for the first few months.  I had a liter bottle I would put one scoop of powder in with one stick CL lemonade......it was strong at first but I would keep adding water to it after drinking some until it was the right flavor.  I drank a minimum 3 of the concoctions a day...I killed 2 birds with one stone.......water and protein.......I still hate the taste of protein shakes but I tolerate them because I know I need them.  Vitamin shoppe has a great return policy so if you feel adventurous you can try a few different kinds and keep returning them until you find something that works for you......I mostly use Designer Whey now and still drink the nectar......you could try the roadside lemonade with a ice tea stick if you prefer less of a tea taste too.......You will find something that you can tolerate......sample sample sample.......LOL

My only thoughs are try mixing with Yogurt (some have the lactose removed) or soy or almond milk.  Also, I like mine warm (totally NEVER thought I would like it this way) but it is the only way I drink it. Also, the only protein powder I really like is the one from Walmart and it is the cheapest!  I have ordered very expensive ones, and some that one person likes another can't stand so I agree with buying smaller and seeing if you like it first.

Unflavored?  I found out the hard way unflavored does not mean tasteless and it DOES change the texture, so I thought the same as you but that didn't work at all for me.

Hang in there and keep trying flavors.  Bariatric Foodie and Egg Faces' websites do have a LOT of suggestions, so you could try a few of those.

Good Luck this week!!!!!

GNC AMP 60 chocolate and strawberry are decent, I mixed one scoop in 4-6 oz of lite vanilla soy milk during my 1st week postop (3 times a day).

My adult niece says the bariatric fusion french vanilla meal replacement shake is good with almond milk.  I thought it was really nasty mixed with the lite vanilla soy milk, but okay with 2% milk.

My sister has tried the french vanilla with skim milk, can't stand it, but likes the GNC stuff with skim.

After trying every protein powder known to man and spending (wasting!) gazillions of dollars when I was early out trying to find a shake that I would enjoy I finally figured out that I would never find one that I actually liked.  So, I started looking at it from a medicinal standpoint.  I needed, and still do, protein shakes every day so what could I do to make it happen?  Well, I just picked the one that I disliked the most, which turned out to be Syntrax Nectar Cappucino flavor, and I shake it up in a blender ball with only 4 oz of cold water.  It is pretty foamy so I have to let it set out for about 10 minutes then I just down it in one drink and get it over with.  I don't enjoy but it doesn't gag me and I'm not sipping on some nasty protein drink for hours.  I do this twice a day and it gives me about 50 grams of protein...I get the rest from food.   Wishing you ALL the best!!
