visit with my friend

I went to visit my friend today in Greenville.  She is much better.  I found out more about what happened and was amazed.  If she weren't such a strong lady, I don't think she would still be with us.  The surgeon told her husband to call the family in on 2 occasions.
She was doing fine and was discharged from surgery in the normal 2.5 days.  She went to the Drs office before going home and while waiting there, got sicker and sicker.  Ended up throwing up blood and passing out.  They took her bu ambulance to the hospital and put her in ICU.  She was out for 12 days, on a ventalator.  During that time they gave her transfusions, thought they had the bleeding stopped, started her blood thiners again, ended up with clots, and did it all over again for 12 days.  Monday they were albe to remove the ventilator and Wed she was moved out of ICU.  Yesterday she started bleeding again and they stopped the blood thiners and went back in and restapled the seam where the intestence attach to the stomach.  They also put a filter in her leg to prevent clots from getting to her heart.  She actually looked very good today and we took a walk down the hall.  Today was the first day she could walk more than a few feet.  She is still really weak but she and the Drs feel she is on the up side.
Funny thing, since she is 3 weeks out of surgery, the hospital is bringing her a regular diet.  Like roast beef and lazania (sp).  She slept through liquids and pureed.  Weird.
Again, thanks to you all for all the thoughts payers and swings.

Wow she sure is a strong woman, ( no offense) but those prayers seemed to have been answered. Hopefully as the days go by she will become stronger. Glad she was able to walk a little more, as they say babysteps.

So glad to hear that your friend is doing better. Sounds like she had a leak? She is a strong lady. She may need liquids and purees, since the seam was restapled, otherwise, wouldn't a regular diet put strain on the new staple line?

I would hve called it a leak but she never did.  And I would think it would still be healing which is why I thought going to normal food was weird.  I can't imagine my group would have put me on regular food this early even  with no problems.  I was 5 weeks before solid food was introduced.  But my group was one of the most conservative, before and after with diet.

I'm so glad to hear she is better....blood clots are just about the scariest part of any surgery!  They can kill instantly......it sounds like she was under excellent medical care!  Please give her our best and continued prayers!  She's a true WLS trooper/hero!
