Offered a surgery date but had to reject it

I have had all of my pre-work up completed a month ago.  I had attended the initial info seminar in April and then the first appt, psych eval, etc started end of May/early June.  My program required 5% weight loss prior to even seeing the surgeon (saw him in September).  I was told last week that my surgeon would not be scheduling any more surgeries this year. I was disappointed but happy to finally know why I had not heard anything.  Then today I receive a call from the scheduler saying I can have surgery Dec 30th.  Yeah!  Except I am scheduled to cover for my co-worker the next week who has had her vacation planned for 6 months.  So I had to say no and to please call when they are scheduling for January.  This bums me out in several ways......I had hoped to have this done this year due to deductible.......I have kept off my 5% and really 10% now for 2+ months.  I know that things will work out okay and I guess I just need a little reassurance from others whose dates may not have worked out the way they hoped. I could switch to another surgeon but the one I have was highly recommended by my primary care physician.   The up side to this is also that I can eat during Christmas and I can continue exercising, etc and preparing for surgery.

Just disappointed I guess that this has not lined up how I had hoped especialluy considering the 6 months I have put into it so far.

Anyone else experienced these type of issues?

Thanks!

Sometimes things are just not meant to be.  My surgery was planned for 2/2005.  My DH had a heart attack and I had to put it off till 3/2005.  It really made me feel funny to have to put it off, but all worked out.  Don't change doctors if yours is highly recommended.

Thanks Ruby!  Also congrats on your fantastic maintenance.  It is reassuring to hear about others' experiences and to know that things will work out!

Just wanted to tell you that maintenance is hard work.  My advise is to lose your weight as fast as you can and maybe go below goal.  After the first year, losing gets harder.   I have had to really work to keep the weight off.  At one time I was up about 20 pounds and have gotten some of that off.  Three weeks ago I had a hysterectomy and have lost 9 pounds icw the surgery.  I am trying to eat to heal, but I am also trying to keep those 9 pounds off.  It has been  a hard way to lose weight, but I am thankful for the lose.

RNY has been very successful for me.  Just realize you have a tool and have to work it.  BTW I weigh every day and write it on a calendar.  That seems to help me stay focused.  Also I walk every day at least two miles, that seems to help.  I can not walk right now because of surgery, but am anxious to get back to it. Good luck and God Bless

My surgery was originally scheduled for October 19th, but then my gallbladder went haywire. My surgeon felt it would be safer for me to have the gallbladder out first, then have the WLS. So, I had my gallbladder out on Oct. 5th and my bypass was moved to November. Given what the pathology report said about my gallbladder, I am glad I listened to him!

Hi from Mills River, right down the road.  We are getting a good group of WNC folks on board.  I didn't have to change dates but I do know you need to go to a Dr you trust and if that means waiting, it is worth the wait.

I'm another one who had to re-schedule.. Originally, I was scheduled for Monday May 3rd-- but that weekend it rained almost 20 inches in Nashville- over 12000 homes were flooded (thankfully not mine- the river stopped 30 feet from my house). We had no power, no phone, and I had been on clear liquids for 3 days. We couldn't even get out of our neighborhood (bridge flooded one way; landslide closed the other way). After the phones came back, I checked my messages and my surgeon had called to say there was flooding at the hospital and all surgeries were cancelled.  I rescheduled for June 14th and all went quite easily-  looking back- I realize that the 6 week delay means very little as this is a long journey-- and so I just got started a little later- but I'm on my way.

You'll get your day- but for now enjoy your holidays and keep preparing for the surgery.

Linda

I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. It is totally worth the wait, and it shows what kind of character you have to put off your surgery to keep your word to your co-worker!

I should have been scheduled for surg 12/09, but through misinformation from Dr. office, (ins only required 3 mo supervised wt loss, not 6 that the Dr. office thought)...so it wasn't sch until March, then I messed up (smoked), and it was rescheduled for May 2010!!!  So I do understand your frustration, and YES I was angry, disappointed, impatient, etc.  I was a very difficult wait, but it all came to pass and now I'm almost 7 months out, and all is well with the world.  Hang in there, it will be o.k., the time will pass..  Hoping you get an early Jan. surg. date.

Thanks everyone for the support.   This group here can be very helpful as so many of you have already been through the process and can relate and share your experiences.  I recall that horrible flood in Nashville and my situation sure can not compare to that.   I also believe that things work out they way they should and am feeling better now after letting the situation sit for a day.  I think part of my anxiety is just wanting to "be on the other side" and know that things went okay.  I have some anxiety about starting on food again post op, etc.

Thanks again for all the words of support.

And Price, I have seen many of your posts on here and am always happy to see a local here!
