Blood Urea Nitrogen

My one year labs came back and it was documented that my score for Blood Urea Nitrogen was abnormally low with a score of 6.  Can anyone provide me with any insight on what this means?  They faxed me my lab report but the nurse typically does a follow-up and I'm just waiting on that.

A low BUN can be seen in someone overly hydrated.  It needs to be looked at in relation to Creatinine.  If this is normal, I wouldn't worry about anything.  It can also be low in chronic drinkers.  Hope this helps, and I am sure the nurse will shed some light as well.

Thanks Jane--I don't think I'm overly hydrated, just the opposite in fact.  As for drinking, I rarely if ever drink alcohol.  Weird-- I will have to see what the nurse has to say.  I googled it and also saw something about it being seen in people with malnutrition.  That kinda scared me.

Yes, it can be seen in malnutrition. However, it would have to be combined with a very low Total Protein.

Thanks Cheryl--my protein score was good.  In fact, everything was good aside from this score.

The BUN can definitely be thrown off by your hydration level. Either over or under-hydrated will do it.
