School Help One More Time

I just got my final assignment for my nutrition class. I have to do another project, but it is on the topic of my choice that relates to nutrition. So obviously, I am going to do mine on the nutritional needs of weight loss surgery patients.

(FYI, I got 120 points out of 100 on my vitamin D presentation...thanks for all the great info!)

So, could everyone chime in with your surgeon's guidelines or what you have found works for you with calories, protein, carbs, fat, vitamins, etc? I would love to get info from all surgery types!

Thanks in advance!

I would start with the diagram for the various surgeries of how the stomach is either changed and if a surgery type that has malabsorption, how it looks.  The diagram (I've seen and Gina has provided before) has where the different nutrients are absorbed into our systems.

From there you can discuss the need for addiitonal vitamins to support the bypassed part of our anataomys and explain how its virtually impossible to get all the nutrients from food alone.

My Dr just recommended a multi-vitamin twice a day, B12 sublingual 1200mcg daily, and then added a b complex about 3 weeks after.  I have included various types of additional vitamins based upon my lab results.  You may also want to focus upon the malabsorption, for 12-18 months, of fats, calories and vitamins.  There are also 2 types of RNY that changes the common channel length.

My surgeon didn't have any guidelines for calores, carbs, fat, etc.

Now that' I'm typing this, you may want to focus just on 1 surgery type (LAP band, Sleeve, RNY or DS) - because I think you're going to have a LOT of information if you try to do all of them - OR focus on the 2 surgeries that are restrictive only, or the 2 that are malabsorptive and do a comparison with the 2 of how the person has different nutritional requirements depending upon the surgery.

Congrats on your Vit D presentation.

I just got started and I think I am going to do an overview with diagrams like you said, then kind of do a very general overview of our eating and vitamins. Basically it's all the same from surgery type to surgery type, just different amounts, etc.

I'm going to disagree with you about "Basically it's all the same from surgery type to surgery type, just different amounts, etc."  You will find those with lap or VSG won't need the same vitamins the RNY and DS do since Lap and VSG absorb all the vitamins they take so they are less likely to become deficient, where as RNY and DS do not absorb all the vitamins and need to take more, of different ones, to compensate.  BUT - initially we all may be given the same vitamin requirements - is that where you're going with this?  Are you going to be talking about further out too?

Perhaps looking at Vitalady's vitamin schedule for the different types will give you a very good idea of what each surgery type should be taking (now, I haven't looked at it, so I can't tell you if there is a big difference).

Well crap - the links within don't seem to be working.  Perhaps Gina can provide an updated one?

You are so right about the vitamins, I was more talking about the food we are supposed to eat. Thanks for the link on the vitamins! I know that part is totally different.

Great job on the Vit D presentation, Shannon! I could use a lesson in all this stuff!  I still don't think I am getting everything right! And I live in an area where severe Vit D defficiency is normal! PM me your paper if you don't mind. Maybe it will finally make some sense.

But back to you and your 120 pts.....Gurl, you are really on a roll!  Have you ever felt better about yourself in your life???  Great job!
