Good Morning. Protein Power

Are our NUTs doing us a disservice by recommending we eat carbs? This is from an article in Today's Dietitian.

Protein Power
What gives protein the edge over carbohydrates when it comes to weight loss? In a word: satiety. Protein has greater satiety than either carbohydrates or fat, making people feel fuller and more satisfied for a longer period of time. As a result, they are better able to control their appetite and eat less.1,2

“I deal with mainly morbidly obese clients, and you just can’t get that satiety on a high-carbohydrate diet. They’re always hungry," says Anding. “On a high-protein diet, clients feel less hungry, so they’ll stay with it."

Hmm..."staying with it" sounds like maintenance to me.

My nut has a fit about the amount of protein I consume. I have upped the carbs quite a bit, but only through veggies and a few whole grains. But I also do long periods of intense cardio. My body burns those carbs. If someone does not work out hard, they don't need those carbs. I try to lower them on my days off too. I keep my protein high too, it does keep me full, plus, I just feel better in general.

Where I am on plan, we can only have 1/4c of starch 2x a day.  That is potatoes, white or sweet, beans, ww pasta, brown rice.  All our other carbs are fruit and veggies.  Because we are always to have protein at a meal and eat that first, I think we will be limited in our carb intake for a long time, if not forever.  Mine are usually 20-50 a day, all healthy stuff.

I do wonder, and don't have a great answer for folks who say the reason for low energy is not enough carbs.  That they are the energy fuel.  I always would say it was due to the drugs during surgery that it took so long for energy to return.  I am up to full energy now, but it did take a while.

I have been following your advice for a long time, and it worries me that my nut says only count the protein. I know I haven't started yet but I know I am a carb junkie and will stay far,far away!

I definitely know that when I eat carbs, I get hungrier faster.  AND I do not believe its ONLY because it slides through my pouch faster and easier, but when it gets into my system and breaks down its releasing sugars - which then can make my blood sugar rise (or fall if its the wrong kind/mix), thus starting the whole cycle over again.

I definitely know that if I eat primarily proteins at lunch, I don't get the "after lunch sleepies"... which is attributable to carbs....

So yes, proteins (and powders) keep my system functioning properly and smoothly.  I'm a believer!! My protein in my coffee in the morning keeps me full and satisfied.

I don't remember if my NUT said anything about the ratio of protein/carbs/fat... I guess I need to pull the book out and look at it.  Perhaps I should give the nice Dietitian lady at the surgeons office a call and ask her what she thinks.

I know when I eat white carbs, I get hungry faster and they make me crave sweets.

When I stick to protein I stay fuller longer and don't seem to have the cravings for the wrong foods.

I don't remember what my guidelines are either.  I'm sure it is in my book at home.  I probably need to sit down one day and read all that information again.
