Struggling - depression vs. hormones?
I'm sorry you're feeling down Maria. I don't remember feeling that way so I can't sympathize but I can empathize....
I have a coworker who was seeing a PA who specialized in endocrinology out of a urologists office...I know weird combo right.....but anyway......the PA ran a TON of labs on her to check her vits, and hormone levels. She was experiencing alot of what you describe......she was told her testosterone levels were way off and was put on a supplement as well as several others for other deficiencies....she said it made a world of difference in her general demeanor. Another co-worker was experiencing similar symptoms and she recommended that she see this PA.......she too had a testosterone deficiency........and I didn't know she was started on the meds but I saw a significant difference in her myself.......Maybe you have some hormone in balances??? Might be worth checking into further.......and definitely make a psych appt.......it may be just what you need!

Maria,
Hormones actually have the same chemical structure as the chemicals in our brain that communicate between nerves, so hormone changes and mood issues can go hand-in-hand. Some of the antidepressants are now actually being prescribed specifically to help women tolerate hormone changes around menstruation, as well as to help with menopause symptoms. I would talk with your primary care doctor or gynecologist about your symptoms and see what they recommend, especially if it is most pronounced around your cycle.
Good luck!

Maria,
I have been having pretty big mood swings and "down" days a lot since surgery. I am post-menopausal so don't know where that falls in the scheme of things but I think Lee may be on to something regarding using food before surgery to alleviate the moods but not having that option afterwards. Whatever it is, I am trying to shake it. Taking an anti-anxiety med but one that does not require daily dosing. I've felt a lot worse at other times but this is no picnic, either, so I can truly empathize.
Keep us posted and I will keep you in my prayers.

Thanks guys!
I do have thyroid issues, but the bariatric doc didnt want to check levels until jan. Still on 50mcgs daily but think that will need to be increased due to how cold I am and feeling this way.
I do miss my simple carbs. They were my drug of choice. So I am having to deal with alot of emotions that I used to stuff down with food.
It is just so weird how one can go from feeling so positive to darn right cranky in a short amount of time! No wonder its called your menstrual CYCLE! I feel like a gerbil stuck on a wheel going round and round!

Maria,
You and I are just about identical in most of our stats (wt. ht., surgery day, etc.) I know exactly how you feel! My emotions are all over the place too......Some days I feel skinny, some days fat. Some days I love all the compliments, some days I loathe them and want to be left alone. Some days I feel like I'll reach my goal, other days I feel like I'll be at this weight forever and be a failure.......the list goes ON and ON!!
This is one HELL of a journey! I did start back on my lexapro after surgery. It definitely gives me the munchees but I just feel BETTER when I take it! We've just got to hang in there and take one day at a time! I hope Thanksgiving will REALLY ground me and help me be truly thankful for this chance to be healthy and alive!!!
Take care and sending lots of prayers and HUGS!!!
